Fenceline fix for dog owners?

We live on a corner lot with roads on 3 sides (2 alleys and a street) of our house. My 2 big dogs chase cars up and down the alleyways all day long and now we have no grass along the fence. What can I do landscaping-wise to make it look presentable?

Growing more grass is not an option - it would never come in. I also don't want to plant a bunch of flowers (though I'm not saying no flowers) that they're just going to trample either. Do I have other options?

  • Tall grasses might look nice and keep the dogs away a bit or I would go with some type of larger perenial.
  • I lined a large portion of my fence with evergreen trees, shrubs, and a bed of mulch.  A quick fix would be to put down a 3-4 foot mulch bed.  Add shrubs and evergreens as your budget allows.

Do they not just run in front of it? That is my biggest fear is that we'll mulch and plant along the fence and then they'll just pace in front of it. They follow sounds more than sights (it's a privacy fence) so it's not that blocking their view would necessarily alter their behavior.

I'm contemplating something along the lines of planting 24 in from the fence to allow them to keep their path, but block the trampled ground from view...but I'm afraid it will look silly

  • Mine run under and behind the trees. God only knows what it looks like back there, but it's hidden.  We share a fence with neighbors who have two dogs.  Our dogs race up and down the fence whenever they are both out there.

I would think you would want to place the shrubs a few feet away from the fence anyway. The shrubs will have room to grow and you can always put more mulch in front of the shrubs if the dogs can't get back there.

ETA:  End of my bio there is a pic of the dogs lounging on the deck.  You can see huge trees in the background.  Those trees are filled in quite a bit now, but the dogs run behind those and nap underneath them.

  • I REALLY love your big beautiful porch! Thanks for the pics. I have some ideas flowing.
