Overdue update on the drama with my Mommom (long and kinda crazy)

So, some of you many remember that my grandmother was in a car accident and had a hip fracture resulting in surgery, pins, rehab, etc. After an excruciating few weeks, she had recovered enough to attend her grandson's wedding in San Diego. But, in trying to transfer flights in Detroit, she was not permitted to use her walker  and no wheelchair was available to get her down the ramp (some BS about them not fitting??). She fell and broker her femur and has been stranded in hospitals and rehab centers for 3 long weeks with no luggage, no family, no nothing. My MIL by some miracle happened to be visiting her mother near Detroit (where MIL and most of DHs family are from) and spent lots of time with Mommom and helped make sure she was being well taken care of. We just found out today that the airline (that you bet your ass is being sued) is flying her home first class on Saturday! She will be escorted the entire way and not forced to walk at all, AND my aunt that lives with her should be designated her caretaker and financially compensated. They have installed a ramp and got her a wheelchair, etc. so the caseworker just has to come by and approve the living situation so EVERYBODY wins! She is terrified to get on the plane for fear of something going wrong again, so let's all cross our fingers and whatnot that everything goes smoothly so she can get home and get better. TIA!

  • I'm so sorry you and your family had to go through all of this, but it looks like things are looking up! I'll be praying for an uneventful flight.
  • So glad to hear that she is ok and getting home safely.  This story makes me super pissed off at that airline for being completely negligent.  They absolutely deserve to be sued over this.

  • What a mess!  I'm so glad she's doing better and that that stupid airline is recognizing their mistake.  So sorry your poor family had to put up with this ordeal.

  • Ugh, so sorry all this is happening.  Poor Mommom!

And I'm glad legal action is happening.  First class does not make it all better.

    Continued prayers for Mommom!

  • oh my goodness!  what a mess!!  I'm glad that they're at least taking small steps to fix things but darn right your grandma should sue!  They, I'm sure, violated the ADA provisions at least by not permitting her access to her walker and refusing access to a wheelchair.  My very favorite uncle is a paraplegic and so I'm super sensitive about people's physical needs like that.  Negligent is putting it nicely I think.  They're lucky that she didn't hit her head and have more serious problems - not that her's aren't pretty significant already.  Ugh - so disgusted with them on your behalf.
  • I'm glad things are looking up for Mommom and that your MIL was able to spend some time with her. Fingers crossed that her trip home is uneventful.
