what keeps chipmunks/rabbits/gophers away?

We seem to have all of the above visiting our yard and eating in our vegetable garden as well as potted flowers, and digging around in my flower bed.   What do you use to keep them away from the plants? I've heard of and read about all sorts of possibilities but want to know what actually works.   I need something safe/non-toxic to the plants and people/animals, as I have a 4 year old daughter and a dog.  Thanks!

Re: what keeps chipmunks/rabbits/gophers away?

  • I use Liquid Fence around our plants that we don't eat (but I believe the bottle says its safe for gardens too...) that keeps the bunnies and deer away. There was a bottle of small pellets, at my local hardware store, that said it was specifically for use with organic gardening to keep chipmunks, gophers, squirrels, raccoons, etc away from the plants. I haven't used the pellets and sorry I cannot recall the name of it, but the Liquid Fence definitely works against the deer and rabbits!
  • Friends of mine recommended Liquid Fence.  I went to purchase it, but it says only for deer and rabbits.  My store recommended a spray (sorry, I can't recall the name right now).  It is organic and keeps away chipmunks, rabbits, gophers, squirrels, voles (sp?), moles, etc.  I just used it last night, so we'll see if it works.  I sprayed it on both my tomato and strawberry plants.

  • Do you have a fence around your garden?  you could exclude rabbits and gophers relatively easily by enclosing the area with chicken wire (put chicken wire under the beds to exclude gophers).

I think chipmunks may be a bit harder.

I'm not 100% familiar with Liquid Fence (but plan to look into it), however most of those type things need to be reapplied after rain or watering so it may be worth it to do something a bit more permanent & use it as more of a spot treatment.

I have tried Liquid Fence and a granule product called "Repels All" and nothing seems to be working for our rabbit problem... I went outside to load my car this morning only to see all of my annuals completely flowerless and i've been putting the granules down once a week (they are supposed to be effective much longer than that).
