Driving License change

Hi ladies,

I moved from NJ to NY. I tried calling DMV but no luck, I get busy tone. I was hoping you can help me.
Can my license be a NY license but insurance and registration still in NJ while I shop for auto insurance? Or do I have to change my insurance and registration on the same day I change my license?

Re: Driving License change

  • Not exactly sure about the insurance info, but when I moved from NJ to NYC, I went to NY DMV License Express Center at 300 West 34th Street
(between 8th Ave & 9th Ave) and it was super quick.  If I were you, I'd just switch my license and get it over with.  HTH!

  • I believe you have a grace period, but I'm not sure.  I moved from NJ to NY also and got a NY drivers license right away, but my NJ insurance told me I had to get NY insurance within 30 days, I believe (check with your current insurance co.). You cannot go to the Express Center for a new license, but you can go there for registration.  I had to go to the main office in Herald Square for my license.  Oh and make sure  you have your social security card with you when you get a new license!  They will not take you otherwise.
