Another travel question (NYC)

Hey guys! I have the most ghet-to travel question ever, I think:

I'm going to New York for 3 nights, and we have packed pretty much everything we want to do into those days.  It occurred to us that we want to see the city view at night from the water, and I looked into the cruises (circle line, etc) but taking 2-3 hours out of our night just isn't really an option.

Last time I was there, we took a train into Hoboken from where we were staying in NJ and took a ferry to Battery Park, which had a great view.  Would it be really weird to just take that ferry from the city into Hoboken and back? Do people do that? If so... is there maybe a ferry ride with a better view that I don't know about? Am I the worst kind of person? Choo, can I borrow the private plane you undoubtedly have? :)

Thanks! :)

Re: Another travel question (NYC)

  • I lived in NY for a year and traveled there all the time.  I have definitely taken the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island and immediately back for views of the downtown skyline and Statue of Liberty.  Free ferry ride?  I have no shame.  Go for it!

  • Hey Dandy- Sorry it took me so long. I've been hiking up in the White Mountains for the past three days... I second the rec for taking the Staten Island ferry over the NJ one. A. It is free (not sure if the NJ one is) and B. It takes you off the southern most tip of Manhattan, giving you gorgeous views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governors Island, and of course, the city itself. The NJ ferry just shuttles back and forth across the Hudson, so you'll see the skyline, but everything else would be far away. And trust me, this isn't ghetto at all. Those Circle Lines are total ripoffs. ...and if I had a private plane (or helicopter, I'm not picky), we'd be on it, sipping champagne. Someday... ;)
