crepe myrtles...root size?

our crepe myrtles are planted right next to the house, unfortunately. we never thought twice about it when we bought the house, but now that they're over 25' tall, i'm starting to question potential foundation damage from the root system.

does anyone have any idea how big/invasive the root system gets on these things? i haven't found much on google...

I've never heard of a single incident of below ground or ground level infrastructure conflicts with Crape Myrtle. Even at 25', they're considered small ornamental trees, and their roots are no match for a concrete curb or a house foundation- when they hit these, they deflect. I'd be very surprised if I ever saw one lifting a sidewalk.

  • Like pp said, there's not even the potential for foundation damage.  Really, they're small trees, even when they're 25' tall.

We moved a 15' crepe that the original owners put under the eaves and that had tried to grow into the gutters (the owners whacked on it every year on the side under the eaves, giving it a horrible shape).  We transplanted it this January and it had a very average size root ball with one large tap root going straight down.  No large roots at all.

  • thank you, thank you, thank you... you guys have made my day!
