DH and I bought our house in March. Now that our wedding has come and gone, we're ready to host our housewarming. We're liking the idea of backyard BBQ. I need a little help/feedback!
I'm totally at a loss for appetizers, but I have the following planned:
- burgers
- hot dogs/brats
- baked mac n cheese
- coleslaw
- chips
- baked beans
- beer and margaritas
Would you add/remove anything? We're expecting 10-15 guests.
Re: Need Food Ideas:
Are you set on mac n cheese? seems like a pasta salad would "fit" better...
also, I def. add fruit - either a fruit salad, fruit platter or a cut up watermelon.
dessert?? how about "make your own sundaes" ? that usually goes over well
or brownies & cookies
have fun!!
I agree with the mac n cheese response... but I totally understand serving it also, my DH loves mac n cheese w his bbq cookouts.
I would probablly add fruit & one more salad.
One of my simple no fail salads is a Cucumber/Onion salad. Basically just cut up a cucumber into very thin slices & do the same with with the onion - you want less onion than cucumber. Then throw in some miracle whip and make sure everything gets a good coating on it. The season with McCormicks seasoning called "It's a Dilly" - it's a salt free seasoning.
Have fun with your party!
I agree with the others, some fruits and veggies are needed. A few posts down "Sew Cute" or something like that she has a tag for a quinoa salad w/ fresh tomatoes and pepers. It is fabulous. (I'd do this instead of the mac and cheese).
For dessert, I would do cut up watermellon.
I hope you have a great time at your housewarming party!
Unlike PPs, I don't eat pasta salad, and would like mac n' cheese!
Maybe add some salsa for your chips. And add some cut up veggies with a dip.
I would consider removing either the beans or the coleslaw if you're thinking of removing something.
Also, don't forget to have bottled water and sodas/lemonade on hand for the folks who don't want alcohol.
For dessert, I'd consider options that doesn't require too many utensils/plates to keep it easy. Cupcakes instead of cake, ice cream sandwiches instead of sundaes, fruit popsciles instead of fruit.
HTH!
I definitely agree with GatorWedsNole - she always has wonderful input.
Make your own sundaes seem very popular on this board, but I can only imagine the mess for the hostess. Sprinkles everywhere, chocolate syrup goo making every surface sticky...ugh, just do ice cream sandwiches or little individual cups.
I would also say that perhaps your menu is a bit predictable. I'd shake up the menu a bit if you can. Try twists on the theme: corn salad, bacon-cheddar-ranch burgers, dill potato salad, etc.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
I am doing the same thing for my housewarming party and for appetizers I am having
Stuffed strawberries
Wonton cups with asian slaw
Veg tray
Tortilla chips with homemade salsa
Regarding the mac & cheese/pasta salad discussion- I KNOW I am really in the minority but I don't eat beef or pork and I also can't have dairy. So a lot of the times, pasta salad is what saves me. If I were at your party, I'd just have a lot of chips and margaritas .... wait, that's not so bad! LOL
Anyway, you can always get advice for things like this but you have a small group and probably know their likes/dislikes and can decide based on that.
I would definitely add some fruit to have a healthy side/snack.
