Can someone please explain Etsy to me?

I would love to sell baked goods via the internet, and I'm not sure if this is doable, or if Etsy is the proper site.

I've heard it mentioned on some of the national boards, but I didn't want to ask there...  Is it just like Ebay?

Re: Can someone please explain Etsy to me?

  • So for baked goods i am pretty sure when i did research for running a baking biz out of my house it said that you are only "allowed" 4 "bake sales" a year with stuff made out of your home kitchen.  If you want to make it a full time business then you would have to re-do your kitchen so that it is up to state health code.... if you find  another loop hole let me know cause i would love to do this as well.

  • Etsy is more for homemade arts and crafts kind of things. There's no bidding like on ebay but it is bought and shipped pretty much the same way. If you go to etsy.com on the main page it has the categories you can sell in. They advertise it as being "all things handmade, vintage, and supplies".

    Hope that helped!

  • Etsy is a website to sell homemade items.

I don't think you could do food items as re-sale for food requires that the kitchen/items pass health codes.

  • similar...etsy is more handmade, one of kind type whereas ebay is really like everything. with ebay you have to bid or some listings have the buy it now thing. etsy has a set price. i've bought some gf breads on etsy that were awesome. also, with etsy you pay like 10 cents per listing of items you sell.

Dang, I was afraid of that.  I did some research last semester and found the same results.  I was *hoping* Etsy would be different :(

Yea, so i did some research around that same time about how much it would cost to get your home kitchen to code and if i am not mistaken it said 10k-12k.  But my mom said their but be area's like clubc i know in clai they had the elk's lodge club or something and they would rent out industrial kitchen space for people who wnat to bake and sell.... maybe you can check something like that out :)
