My garden is washing away!!! HELP!!!

My front garden is at probably a 15 or 20 degree slope. When it rains heavy, my topsoil starts running into the grass. I have a 2" deep trench that's about 4-5" wide at the front of my garden and a pile of topsoil in my grass. What can I do to stop the wash out?

Can you move the garden elsewhere and let the grass fill in?

The garden is directly infront of the porch. It separates the grass from the house. I've already got very mature bushes in there along with my brand new knockout roses.

How about building a low wall? Just enough to contain the slope?

This is probably the best solution.  If your slope is that steep, unless you have a barrier, the loose top soil or mulch is going to continue to run down.

  • Mulch is a good option. Also, a small filter strip might help. At the top of the slope, plant native plants with long, deep roots and some grasses. You can plant another at the bottom.
