Name Change Help!

How long does it take to get a copy of the marriage certificate?  I need to start the process of changing my name but before I do that, I obv. need that piece of paper.  Also, any other suggestions about the process?  Thanks!

Re: Name Change Help!

  • I'm not sure how long it takes, but it's not long.  Call the town where you applied.  You should be able to just pick up copies ($10 each I believe).

Once you get that, go to the closest Social Security office (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp).

After you get your name changed with SS, you can go to the RMV to get your new license and registration and then to the bank to change your accounts.  Once those are done, pretty much everything else can be done over the phone.

  • Ours was waiting for us in our pile of mail when we got back from our honeymoon about 10 days later. We also went to town hall and got a few extra copies.

I started at the social security office, made my way over to the registry and then to the post office for my new passport. If you have had your passport for under a year they will give you a new one with your new name on it free of charge (at least they did in 2008). I then made a list of everything else with my name on it and started making calls and changing things online. I still get some things with my maiden name on it but for the most part it was easy.

  • It takes about two weeks, but it depends on how quick the town you apply for your lincense in is. When you go to apply you can give them the money up front and a self addressed, stamped envelope so they can mail you your copy asap.

    Then do what MrsT said.

And you don't have to wait for your new SSA card to come in the mail to go to the RMV. It just needs to be reflected in the SSA system, which it should be by the time you get over to the RMV and wait in line. I called the RMV before I got married and the idiot I talked to said I had to wait for the card, which took 5 weeks (longer than usual of course) but I called the RMV back after 3-4 weeks and was told I didn't need to wait for it.

  • I remember it only taking a week, maybe even less. It also depends on how fast the person who signs it gets it to the post office.

And definitely head to Social Security first! Once that it done, everything else is easy!
