What is in between Chicago and St. Louis?
My family lives in Chicago and my husband and I live in St. Louis. Every year we like to get together for a weekend. When I used to live in Chicago, we went to Galena, but now Galena is so far away for us to drive, almost seven hours, way too long!
So my mom would like us to find something that is more between the two of us. The only place I could think of is Peoria. Does anyone where to stay in Peoria, or where to go?
Or are there other places that are in between that we should be looking at?

When I was a kid, my family moved from Chicago to St. Louis. My parents would drive to Springfield to meet my childhood best friend and bring her back to St. Louis with us. So apparently that's about halfway! (I think it's actually closer to St. Louis, but at least it's a major city.)
Crash likely knows more about Central IL than me! Yes I can answer some questions about my fair residency of Peoria. (Tomorrow I may not want to be associated with the area.) You've also been given some great recs of Springfield, Champaign and Bloomington/Normal.
What interests does your family have? Each town has it's own set of museum type things, minor league teams, historical sites. Abraham Lincoln 200th birthday is in 2009... so you could make a theme visit out of that.
