iOS4 update taking forever (iPhone)

Anyone else run into this?

My phone has been connected to iTunes and it's downloaded the update to my computer (I guess) and now it's working on syncing to my phone. It's been at least 2 hours all together.

I stopped the syncing and clicked "update" again and it's gone straight to trying to update it since I already have the update downloaded.

How long did it take for yours to update?

Re: iOS4 update taking forever (iPhone)

  • I've been messing with it for a couple hours now (add in the fact that I decided to finally take all of my Christmas music off my phone and hit a couple error messages along the way).

After the software download, the "Backup" step on installation took the longest.  Actually, it may have even been longer than the download.  I thought it was frozen and so canceled and restarted a couple times, but finally I decided to just leave it alone.

Someone on a non-Nest board I read commented that they wished they had cleared their pictures off their phone first because it caused their backup to take 2-3 hours.  I have about 100 pics on mine, so I guess that could be the problem.

ETA: 15 minutes later and the darn thing has restarted itself about four times now.  And at some point I was typing when a dialog box came up and I accepted whatever it was, turned on AC/DC in iTunes, and now it's busy restoring itself again and I can't turn it off!  Thank goodness for mute!

My actual software update didn't take too long, maybe 30 minutes total?  I'd synced my phone in the morning, so maybe that helped.

However, I wanted to sync up the folder's I'd created, so I reconnected and synced shortly after the OS update, and then it decided to redo all the pictures.  That took a few hours.  I just left it and went about my evening.

Can I say how much I'm loving the folders thing?  So nice.

  • Mine was going on 1.5 hours without really moving.  I unplugged it and of course got an error message.  I restored and backed up my phone and that took like 30 min.  Oddly enough, when it was done I had OS4 on my phone.  Not sure what happened but I lost all my apps but my pictures and contacts are still there.  I can redownload my free apps and it remembers me but I think I need to call for the apps I already paid for.

  • Well I left it on overnight and I woke this AM and it worked. For 3G did we not get the update for changing our main background?

  • I did a backup and restore rather than an update - it was *much* faster (I have a 3G).
  • mine only took about 15 minutes.

and to the PP, if you have just the 3G, you don't get all of the new perks including the change of background.

I am loving that i can make new music playlists on the phone as opposed to having to do it on my computer.

  • It took about 15 minutes, but I didn't backup. I have a 3GS.
  • Aw, that sucks about the background. Thanks for letting me know.
