Question of the Day

In an effort to get conversation moving here, here's a question for the STL Nesties:

Do you have a home garden this year?  If so, how's it coming along?  What did you plant?  Any successes thus far?  (And if not, any desire to in the future?  What's holding you back?)

To answer my own question, yes we do have a garden!  We have a small covered porch off the front of our condo in the City, so we're planting tons of herbs in pots, all of which look lovely (so much basil, I smell like pesto!)  We also planted tomatoes and peppers in a couple of Topsy Turvys, and boy howdy, do we have tomatoes or what!!  12 green ones so far with more to come... so excited!  Highly recommend it to others with small porch gardens.  So long as you have sunlight (and water them daily), it's totally doable!

Re: Question of the Day

  • We have a tomato plant and a pepper plant.  We used regular pots to plant them.  The tomato plant has taken off, but is starting to wilt now (possibly due to all the rain?) anyway, no fruit on it yet, so we shall see how it turns out.  I can't wait until we have a house and have the space to grow more things!

  • No Garden.  I've tried, multiple years in a row (this is the 5th summer in our home) and things die...except for the weeds.   My goal is to cut down the ugly trees in my front yard and plant flowers around where the trees are but DH isn't buying into that plan.

  • Nope, although we would love one.  We had one in Chicago and planted a ton.  Unfortunately, our yard keeps getting washed away with all this rain (the lot next to us is not built on yet, so the mud keeps washing over our grass).  Hopefully, next year there will be a house next to us and we can plant cucumbers, tomatoes, and zucchini.

  • It's never been something I've wanted to do.  I don't even have house plants because I would kill them too quickly.  Cooking is not something I am good at and don't really enjoy so growing my own food wouldn't really be something I would do either I guess.  I do like to plant flowers though!  Does that count?  :)

  • Flowers certainly count!  I'm terrified of bugs, though, so herbs are perfect for me... bees and wasps tend to stay away!
  • I guess.  We bought a house and I have always killed off my plants. We did some landscaping in May and those are holding up pretty well. I just hate weeding. I can always find some other things to do.  A few days ago I planted basil, rosemary, tomatoes and chives. We'll see how those turn out.
  • We have a few rows of tomato plants, a bit of okra, and some lettuce. Not tons, but it's a start. We have already had some cherry tomatoes, and are awaiting our first sliced tomato from the garden!
  • No garden here.  I would love to have one but even though we have an acre almost half of that is in the front of the house and in the back it's all woods.  Glad to hear you are having success with the Topsy Turvy.  I've always wondered if they really work.  Maybe I'll give that a shot.
