Don't rent from Dollar Rental Cars

If you're travelling, don't choose them.

We reserved a mid-size car online. Says it could fit 5 and 3 pieces of luggage. Perfect since it was for us and my parents and 2 checked luggage pieces.

We get to the counter in Orlando only to be told that the only car they have is a PT cruiser and it will only fit one piece of our luggage. It really fit only that without viewing being blocked. I was really upset. So we essentially had to upgrade for $15 a day to the jeep. Not happy since it was an extra $45 on our fee.

I just got off the phone with their customer service. Poor to say the least. She said they only guarantee rates and that they never guarantee make of a car. I said I understood that and wasn't picky about the type of car I got but I thought it was bad business to say it could fit one thing and give me another.  I asked her what we should have done since it didn't fit everyone there since she said we "chose" to upgrade. She said, well, next time, choose a different car. So I asked her again, what should we have done at that moment since we had no choice bc we needed to fit everyone. She repeated her first response. So essentially, they don't care if what they give you doesn't fit what the site says as long as the price is the same. Manager would not speak with me since "they do not waste their time with these complaints". More like "many people call with this issue and they can't take their whole day to deal with it" I bet.

Either way, I'd stay away.

Oh! Best thing? She's sending me a coupon book for my time. I told her to burn it. ;)

Re: Don't rent from Dollar Rental Cars

  • That sucks you had to go through that.  It's amazing they stay in business.

We just rented from Dollar in Tampa a few weeks ago.  We will probably never rent from them again, not b/c of their CS at the desk, but from the whole experience, much different from Enterprise.  They wanted us to fill the tank up within 10 miles of the airport and show them a receipt, a bit odd but ok....also, if the tank wasn't full...they were going to charge $7.99 per gallon.  Wow!  And they didn't have a rep walk you to the car to go over and sign off on any damages...we took pictures in case they wanted to blame something on us.

Yeah, we totally thought all of this was odd, too. We just weren't pleased with them and for a bit more money, I'd rather do business with someone better.

We got the car with 1/4 tank of gas and returned it as such and they wanted to harass me about it. Luckily, I did have a paper that said it was only 1/4 full and shoved it in their face saying that if that's what you give me, that's what you give back. They didn't charge my CC any extra so I guess it worked. So freakin' frustrating, esp when on vacation!

  • Yeah, it's no way to start or end your vacation.

Speaking of which, did you stay in Orlando or go somewhere else?

  • I rented from Dollar in Tampa a few years ago I forgot what kind of car I reserved now, but same thing.. I get there and she says, we are transferring all our cars over for the season, all we have is a PT cruiser. I said I will not be caught dead in that thing.. so I got stuck upgrading to a Jeep as well whioch I wound up absolutely loving, however, day 2 I get a nail inthe tire and had to call CS.. well technically they like you to return it the airport and I was staying an hour away from the airport, so nooooo give me another option please.. so they gave me some place down in clearwater which is where near I was.. but I took my dad with me in case there was going to be any ruckus.

Almost had ruckus, the look ont he lady's face was enough for me to want to punch it, because of course they normally don't return cars here, etc.  so I gave her a list of the people I spoke to at CS, etc and told her she could call them if she would like and she reluctantly did it and I wound up with a Dodge Charger which I hated as well.- but luckily my parents live down there PT now so they just pick me up from the airport now and I don't usually rent a car.. its a big hassle.

We did 2 days in Disney and then went to Boca Raton and stayed with family in their MTV cribs-esque house on the ocean for 3 days for my cousin's graduation. It was a great vaca minus the car BS. :)

Have you been to Disney before?  What parks did you go to?

Dh and I love Disney!  Our last trip there was back in September, we stayed right on the property for a week, we had a blast.

Sounds like you had a nice vacation!

  • Yup! We've been before. This was only Jeff's second time. His first was for his aunt's wedding...it was a family trip and while nice, it was frustrating to be dragged around to do family things so we wanted a couple days to make sure we hit what we really wanted. We SPED through parks, which was great bc we knew what we wanted to do. We did all of them except the water parks. :) Though in Animal Kingdom, we only did Expedition Everest and then left.
  • It might be worth writing a letter to their corporate offices to let them know about the issues - I don't know if Dollar Rent A Car is a franchise, but they may get their wrists slapped for the poor customer service.

I am thinking of writing a letter but I actually called their HQ customer service line. Crappy business head to toe, I have a feeling.

I'd still write a letter anyway. It was absolutely ridiculous what you went through. You went by the size description when you booked the car, and they even said that the PT did not meet that description. The way CS handled it was awful. Even if you get nothing out of it, you should still let them know. Sorry you had to go through that.

  • We rented from Dollar out of Orlando, I reserved the 'mystery car' which was a really good rate and said it is be midsized or bigger.  We got a Dodge Caravan for a really cheap rate!  It was perfect actually, so I guess we got lucky.  The line to get our car though was REALLY long, way longer than any other rental car place.  And about a month after our trip, we got a $75 charge on our credit card from Dollar.  I called and found out it was because we got a ticket for missing a toll booth, I guess we were supposed to get off the highway and go through a toll booth but we stayed on.  I was mad that they didn't inform us of the charge before it just appeared on our card!  They had their own fee on top of the ticket fee and ended up removig thier fee which was like $50.
