so is my compost ruined now?

I have a pile of browns next to the compost bin. I took a handful and dropped it in the bin and then realized it felt a little smooshy and wet. I looked at my hand and there was a shmear of poop (a sniff test confirmed this). Some animal, most likely a cat, did it's business in the pile. I tried to poke around with the shovel, but I couldn't find it.

Will I not be able to use this compost for my veggies now? That would make me very sad.

Re: so is my compost ruined now?

  • I probably wouldn't use it for veggies. I would for a plant garden though. Can you start a new bin in the meantime?
  • cat manure should be composted for 18 months before being used for edible crops
  • That's what I thought. Sad

  • I'd get a new one going on the side while you figure it out. I sure hope cats aren't doing their business in my pile, but now that you mention it, I bet they are. Good grief.
  • That sucks, I'm sorry!  I wouldn't use it for veggie crops.  I would get a fully enclosed bin started.
