DH's work transferring him... Q?

He'll be working for Boeing in Charleston and he doesn't mind a 30 minute commute.  Do you girls know what the best family oriented neighborhoods are around there?  Any other information would be great, we've never even been on the East Coast, we're from Seattle Washington.

Re: DH's work transferring him... Q?

  • Summerville is where my husband grew up and it's a very nice town close to Charleston.

  • If he is at the actual Boeing plant, the closest neighborhoods are in West Ashley (west of the Ashley River).  There are a lot of developments off of Hwy 61 that have been built in the past five - ten years or even newer. Hunt Club is one but there are probably a dozen in the area.

Mt. Pleasant is on the other side of Charleston peninsula and a little more expensive and, well, "yuppie".  There are a lot of great neighborhoods though.

Summerville is further away and probably the least expensive, a lot of people commute from their (depending on traffic and location 30-45 minutes at most I would think).

    Hope that helps.

  • Summerville is nice, and the commute would be 30 mins or so, depending on his work schedule and traffic patterns, traffic is horrible to heavy most days from 7:30-8:00 one way and 5:00-6:00 returning.  The neighborhoods in Summerville are mostly family friendly.  I think it all depends on what you're looking for.

Mt. Pleasant is nice, but more expensive, and I think he'd be going against traffic mostly.

West Ashley (which still has a Charleston address if you're going to search addresses), has some really nice and cute areas as well.

If you're looking for specific neighborhoods that have pools and stuff just a few that come to mind that you may be able to search would be Wescott Plantation, Indigo Palms, Lakes of Summerville (but these are all in the Summerville area, its all I can think of off the top of my head, sorry!)

Where do you live, out of curiosity?

If your kids will be school aged while you're still living here,  I'd be in Daniel Island, Mt Pleasant or Summerville.  There is a lot of new development on Clements Ferry which would be close to North Charleston (isn't that where Boeing is?) and the kids could go to Daniel Island schools.

  • Thank you girls!!!  We'll be going to check this place out soon and will put all the places you told us about at the top of our home shopping list.  After we get there and all settled in I'll be looking for little buddies for my LO's.  Ahhh, can't wait to move close to the beaches and ocean!  Where I live (Near Seattle Washington) it takes 4-5 hours to get to the ocean.

for west ashley neighborhoods, i'd look at shadowmoss, hunt club, grand oaks, carolina park, & bolton's landing.  we live in this area of west ashley, outside I-526 & its great because of how close it is to boeing.  summerville will be more economical.  white gables is really cute.  dorchester 2 has better schools than charleston county, so neighborhoods like indigo palms might be nice, but personally i'd prefer to not live near ashley phosphate.  neighborhoods off of dorchester rd wouldn't be bad either since he could take that way to work instead of getting on I-526.  i know a few people that live near the air force base.

I grew up on Isle of Palms and now live in Mt. Pleasant.

  • Berkeley and Dorchester 2 schools are better than Charleston County.  After teaching there, I'd never send my kids to school in West Ashley, but that's just my personal opinion.  I also wasn't a fan of West Ashley traffic.  You'll get more bang for your buck in Summerville. Goose Creek and Moncks Corner also have some nice neighborhoods.  You're going to love Charleston!
  • You won't want to be anywhere expect Mt. Pleasant! Sure, home prices in Mt Pleasant can be a tad higher than surrounding areas, but really not that much and I am willing to spend a bit more to be in a nicer area without too much "riff raff". You won't be more than 10-15 minutes from the gorgeous beaches of Isle of Palms, there is shopping in the outdoor mall Towne Center, a good amount of restaurants a bars, movie theaters, and plenty of grocery stores to choose from. Also, depending on where it Mt Pleasant its just a quick drive over the Cooper River Bridge to downtown Charleston! Crime in Mt. Pleasant, while it does exist, is lower compared to West Ashley (commonly called 'West Trashley').

Mt. Pleasant is very family-friendly with lots of successful professionals living there.

  • My brother-in-law just moved to Hanhanah,(spelling?) SC from Boston. They live in Tanner Plantation which is very nice. Its a new development.

And Mt. Pleasant is commonly called Mt. Plastic. Summerville is called Scummerville. I know a nickname for every area. WTF was your point here?

  • Hello everyone! I just moved to Charleston with my husband (married in September) he also works for Boeing. I just wanted to drop in and say hello!
  • Thats where DH and I just moved to as well and I love it
