anyone here drink raw milk?

I'm becoming curious about it. Initially I didn't think of it as an option because dh "hates the taste". But I buy organic milk for me and the kids and conventional milk for him anyway because he also "hates the taste" of organic milk. I swear sometimes he's just being ornery.

There's an organic farm near to us and I am heavily considering doing a full CSA share from them next year (includes raw milk, eggs, meat and vegetables).

How different does it taste?

Re: anyone here drink raw milk?

  • usually they'll give you a sample. It tastes like milk - lacks the plastic jug flavor :-)
  • We're looking into a raw milk share, as it should be cheaper than the $6 a gallon I pay for Organic Valley.  It would be another step in our "eat local" journey.  I'm curious about the taste too.  We'll definetely pasturize it at home though, as that seems like the smart thing to do.

  • Can someone school me on the advantages of raw milk? We have a local dairy that does raw milk but at $10/gallon the benefits would have to be pretty significant for me to consider it.

  • A friend of mine just did a series on her blog exploring the different kinds of milk and research supporting the various claims

  • Is it possible to go visit the farm's dairy and see how clean their process is?  I've only had raw milk a few times, but I've been working with an 80 year old farmer in my town and the first time I entered his milk room, I was amazed!  Everything about his milking area was completely pristine.  I know he has super high standards for any employees in terms of cleanliness.  That is one place I would have no qualms about buying unpasteurized milk from.  I've worked in regular dairies, and heard things that would turn your stomach.  There's a reason they need to pasteurize milk that comes from large dairies.  Those things become much less of an issue on a small farm.
