Sushi Recs

DH and I will be spending a few nights in the city next week and we would like to try a sushi restaurant.  We we told that either Sunda or Japonais would be great choices.  If you have been, which would you recommend?  Also, we have never had sushi before, so this will be our first time trying it.  Any recs on where to start on the menu?  Thanks!

Re: Sushi Recs

  • I live downtown and MH and I go out for sushi all the time. Our All-TIME FAVORITE sushi place is "Sushi O Sushi" - it is AMAZING! You should really go there. It's about a mile from The John Hancock Center but we walk there and back all the time. If you go there, get the Armitage Roll!

  • Both of those are awesome choices.  And they both have other options on the menu if you decide to get non-sushi things.  Personally I think Japanois is more "date-ish" than Sunda.  Sunda seemed better for groups.  And Japanois has a patio outside on the river if it's nice out.  We went to Japanois the night we got engaged :)  Have a blast!
  • I also like Sushi Samba.  Sunda also has alot of non sushi options to try, if you are so inclined.

  • I've never been to those places.  Our fav spot is a little place in Lincoln Park (on Clark near Belden) called Sushi Para Too.  It is so fresh!

Sushi gets expensive very fast. This place is all you can eat for under $20 pp.  We went to an all you can eat place when first trying sushi and it was nice to be able to order and try a bunch of different kinds without paying a fortune.

  • Toro.  Lincoln Park.

  • Japonais is not that good and is only a place for show.  Not worth the premium they charge.  I hear Mirai is the best though haven't been there yet.  I really enoyed South Coast (sister restaurant to Coast in Bucktown).  In the Gold Coast area there is Ra Sushi or Tsunami, both are pretty good.  In the west Loop there is Sushi Wabi.  For what I hear is very authentic sushi is Katsu in Rogers Park.  Sushi Samba in River North is decent and the atmosphere is nice (especially the bathrooms).

Sushi Para is all basic stuff because it is all you can eat and cheap.  It will not give you the experience or the fancier rolls that other places mentioned will do.

  • I go to Sushi Para II when I want all you can eat, otherwise I go to Tank in Lincoln Square (too far from downtown if that is where you are), or Coast in Bucktown, if you want to experience a new neighborhood...just hop on the blue line to damen/north/milwaukee.  Sushi can be tricky if you AND dh are new to it, so have the servers recommend some things.  Start out with Miso Soup, Cucumber salad, or edename (sp?).  Yum, have fun.
