Landscaping ?s

What plants have you had luck with in AZ?

Where did you purchase your plants and ground cover?

Is your ground cover gravel, grass, or ???

Any inexpensive and/or low maintenance plant suggestions or nursery recs?

Thanks a million ladies Wink

Re: Landscaping ?s

  • I have no idea about anything other then we have these funky trees in my front yard that just grow and grow and grow. Then we have these plants that kind of look like aloe plants? No idea, but all my neighbors have the same thing but theirs have these huge thins growing out of them. I call them the Penis plant, hahah!

Can you tell I have no idea about the landscaping stuff here in AZ!

Oh and our back yard is grass. The people who lived here before us planted it and it's maintaining pretty well. We have to water it ALL THE TIME though. But it's nice to not have a dirt / gravel back yard for Will.

  • i would stay away from the craigslist landscapers. we hired one because he was cheaper than anyone else and he was a moron. this was earlier this year and it was our big project this spring

with that said i would get lantanas. they are hearty. i also bought some bogenvias (i havn't a clue at how they're actually spelled) oh and i've been pleasantly suprised with how well my hibiscuss is doing and that was a home depot purchase. we also have gravel but i wanted some grass so we put in curbing around the yard and now have grass in the back and some in the front. although because of the weather and watering the small patch in the front yard is dying in some areas which are driving us nuts so we are considering replacing with turf. that way it looks great throughout the year. oh and our lime tree is a rockstar so i would say any citrus trees in AZ weather would do great.

we ended up pouring more concrete making a bigger pool deck and a fire pit. our backyard is now very awsome but we still need some TLC for our BBQ area. i will see if i can get some pic's to post

  • Plants - Bougainvillea, Lantana, Sago palms, Asparagus ferns, Yucca, Pigmy palms and ice plant have all done well in our yard.

Trees- Most fruit trees (lemons, limes, oranges), Queen palms, Mexican Fan palms (actually, any kind of palm tree)--- stay away from Palo Verdes, we had two in our yard, just took one out and I absolutely HATE the other one.  They bloom yellow in the spring and are the biggest mess ever!  If it weren't so big and created so much shade, the other one would come out as well.

We buy most of our plants at Home Depot and Lowe's.  They're really knowledgable about what will and won't grow in AZ.  Most plants are also labeled so you know if they're drought resistant, freeze resistant, full sun or shade, etc.  We have a small area of grass in the backyard, with gravel and plants all around (PIB).  We just re-did the front yard with most of the plants I mentioned, no pics though.  We got insperation by driving through our neighborhood, and the ones around us, and taking pictures of people's yards.  Then if we liked a plant, but didn't know the name, we could show it to someone at HD or Lowe's to help us.

  • palm trees were all that was in our yard when we bought the house and frankly they are so hearty i don't think you could kill them but we hate trees that lose there leaves so we went to a few nurserys asking about which trees would grow big and give shade and not those there leaves. we ended up with a brazilian pepper and a mastic tree. you can see the mastic real well in that last pic.

Both of those are really pretty!

I also like your idea on how to get inspiration, I will definitely be driving around with the camera this weekend.
