Plainfield - Thoughts on the area?

My husband and I will be moving to Indy in the next 6 months.  I don't know much about the area... and I was looking at houses.   I know that Carmel, Zionsville, and Fisher are on the top of everyone's list as a good place to live.

But,  I have found alot around Plainfield.  Any thoughts?  Is it an up and coming area?  Younger families? Older?  Family friendly?  Retirement village?  How far is the commute to downtown?

Re: Plainfield - Thoughts on the area?

  • Um I work with an older lady who lives in Plainfield.  I think it all depends on where you live in Plainfield.  She claims it only takes like 20 minutes to get down town but I think it is farther out than that but not much.

Have you checked the south side out all?  Greenwood, Bargersville, and Center Grove are nice areas too.

  • I second Center Grove and Bargersville (Greenwood area).  It is growing a lot and Center Grove has a great school district (so I've heard).  We have been working with a Greenwood realtor, and he really knows the area.  let me know if you need a contact.  Good luck!

  • Oh, as far as Plainfield.  I like their outdoor mall and they have close access to the airport, but that is about all I know.  I also know an older couple that lives in the area.

  • My brother and his GF live in Indy, but very near Plainfield proper. They like it very well--and I think in general it is family friendly (they don't have kids now)

The areas the other ladies suggested are great--if you want a couple more to the mix you could check out Avon or Brownsburg. Farther out than Plainfield, but the same side of town.

    Good luck with your relocation!

  • Where will you be working?  Because if you need easy access to the highway, parts of Plainfield are very far from the highway.  Some parts of Plainfield are older homes with families but there are new developments popping up.  There are good places to shop & eat.

I would also suggest Avon or Brownsburg, I think they are pretty comparable price wise.  Or you might want to look just outside of Avon, but in Marion County.  Plainfield, Avon & Brownsburg are in Hendricks County, which I have been told costs more to live in then Marion County.  I live in Indianapolis, just outside of Avon and enjoy the West side very much.  Greenwood is another good area.

You need to determine whats important to you.  Depending on where you will be working, how far of a commute you are willing to have?  Do you like to go out to bars or restaurants?  Things like that.

  • I currently live in Avon and we love it, but if you need to commute downtown or to another part of town I would suggest Brownsburg or Plainfield.  Both cities have better access to interstates.

Plainfield has good shopping, restaurants, and is well planned city.  Its true some areas are farther away from the interstates than others but what city doesn't have that.  Plainfield also has great parks and tons of walking and running trails.

You can't go wrong with Avon, Brownsburg, or Plainfield schools either.

We love this side of town because we have a smaller town feel but we can get to anywhere in Indy fairly easily.  Good luck with the relocation!

  • I grew up in Avon and taught 5th grade at Avon Intermediate School West.  Avon/Plainfield/Brownsburg are great and all have good schools.  Plainfield has good property taxes and Brownsburgs are fairly high.

Currently I live in Greenwood in Center Grove school district.  This area is also very nice.

Where will you and your husband be working?  Let me know if you need any help with the area.  I'm a Realtor now and have a lot of  info about the school districts in the area.  Feel free to pm me or email me if you'd like more info.

  • We moved to Plainfield 2 years ago and we're planning on staying here for the long haul.  It's a quite area, the traffic is not as insane as Avon, lots of access to shopping, restaurants, and easy to get around Indy.  Takes about less than 1/2 an hour to get anywhere in Indy...bout 15-20 minutes to Downtown.

Lots of younger families in the area, and older folks too.  School district is amazing as well.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies.

I will be hopefully working from home.  The hubs will be working downtown.

We've still got a little time to worry about it... but I am a planner and like to have my research done!

We have a dog... no children yet, but Lord willing, soon.  So, family friendly, good schools, but not too far from downtown are things that are important to us.
