TIA!
Re: thinking about moving
Where do you live now?
DH & I moved here a little over a year ago from Upstate NY. We LOVE it.
The weather right now is 105 degrees with no humidity. In the "winter" it's just amazing. It's sunny all the time and hardly ever rains.
There are nice places to live all over the Valley but it's going to depend on where you guys will work. You will not want to live too far as rushhour traffic is HORRIBLE!!
Give us a little more info so we can help you narrow things down.
The weather is...hot. In the summers ("summer" here starts in like, beginning of May) we are consistently in the 100's-110's, not too humid except a little bit in July and August. It stays pretty hot through October. It is sunny almost year round. The winters are very mild, you don't even need a winter coat.
Really, anywhere in the valley is good to live. Each place has its pros and cons. I live in Cave Creek, which is about 30 min north of downtown Phoenix and I love it.
While most people absolutely love it here, I'll give you my real, honest opinion (we've been here 5 years).
I had to LOL at the weather question! There are no such thing as 4 seasons here-- it's nice and hotter than sh!t. We eat Thanksgiving dinner, and sometimes Christmas, outside on the patio, it's usually in the upper 60's during that time. You get ocassional days of rain from December to March and scattered monsoon storms in July and August. It could be pouring at my house and dry and sunny 20 minutes away at my office.
We loved the year-round sunny weather the first couple of years, we're now tired of it and miss rain, cloudy days and cooler temps. You basically have to flip your seasons-- during the summer you stay inside or in the pool (actually in the pool, sitting by it is too hot), but it's too hot to do anything else. During the "winter" you take advatage of the cooler temps. Because of this, I feel cheated out of the typical summer stuff most people are doing right now, like having BBQ's-standing in front of a grill when it's 110 is NOT fun and no one wants to eat outside!
As for where to live, that really depends on where your jobs are- the traffic can be horrible if you live/work on opposite sides of town. The job market here is extremely tough, Phoenix right now has one of the highest unemployment rates and worst economy in the nation. I would not consider moving here without at least one of you already having a job lines up.
While we have no regrets moving here, it's definately not a place we want to stay. Just be sure to do your research and try to visit a few times- especially during the summer!
We moved here last year and I love it. I love the heat (people think I am weird) but hate the bills that go along with the heat...
I also agree that where you live should be more based on where you are going to work. IMO the rush hour traffic is not even close to horrible, but I come from Boston where it takes 90 minutes to go 5 exits on the highways so depening on where you come from will depend on how you will feel about the rush hour. It takes my husband about 45 minutes to get to work in rush hour traffic and about 25-30 not in it so we do pretty good.
And like PP said, the job market is CRAP so if you don't have a job lined up, I wouldnt just up and move here unless you have $$ and time to look because depending on what you do for a living it could be very hard to get a job.
I agree with Erin on so many points.
I loved AZ the first few years, even the first five years...I hate it now.
Hate is a strong word, but the summers become BRUTAL after the novelty wears off. That being said, our winters are amazing, I love them.
I miss seasons though. I miss rain, clouds, gloominess, heck I even miss snow (and I'm from Canada, I know SNOW).
The traffic sucks.
As Erin said, our economy is bad, really bad. If you don't have a job here, I would be worried to just come out and try to find one.
Some people love it though, and more power to 'em!
I would check around the entire valley for places to live. Everyone has different tastes, and Phoenix is so large that you'll find great areas everywhere. We live in the West side now - Peoria specifically. But I went to high school in Scottsdale, and lived in Tempe for four years. I loved both of those areas as well.
