meet-the-neighbors party

FI and I bought a house in March and, while I've met a good amount of the neighbors, I'd like to have a really simple get-together to meet the other neighbors and get to know everyone a little better. What would be a nice, easy, inexpensive party to have? I was thinking of doing a dessert bar, but I'm open to anything. (There are about 13 houses of people I'll be inviting...mostly middle-aged couples, some with kids.)

You could do a potluck.  You do the main meat and everyone else brings sides and desserts.

For this time of year, do an ice cream/dessert social. Have it early afternoon between lunch and dinner or later after dinner. Have a few types of ice cream (homemade even), toppings, cones, cookies, fruit, brownies and some drinks. Maybe even popsicles for kids.Buy some cute napkins and there you have it.

My neighborhood does tons of social type events and the two PP hit the nail on the head.  Potluck and ice cream socials are our two top events every year!  I would lean to the ice cream social this go-round because it is easier for people to drop by and not feel committed to staying for a whole meal.
