Tomatoes have reseeded

I finally went out and pulled the giant weeds in the garden.  I found a bunch of tomato plants that reseeded themselves in a new area.

I thinned some a bit since they were growing like a bush, and would love to get a few surprise plants.

Any tips on getting anything out of the volunteer plants?   They're about 8" tall so I don't know if they'll have time to catch up, but I figure they can't hurt anything by growing where they are either way.

Re: Tomatoes have reseeded

  • did you grow heirlooms or hybrids?  If you grew heirlooms you can expect the plants to bear fruits just like their parents.  If you grew a hybrid your volunteer plant might have really funky fruit (this could be good or bad).

Overall, just treat them like your other ones.

  • I had a "volunteer" tomato plant last year that produced well into November, long after the deliberately planted ones had died.  It was nice to have fresh tomatoes so late!
