Growing avocados...

from the pit.... Anyone have any experience with this? I've been trying to do this at my house and it's not going very well. :(

Yes, they grow like weeds for me. Very fast. What's yours doing?

  • Nothing! lol. I have them in cups suspended by toothpicks in water... and they have been there for a few weeks. The are starting to split and crack open, but not roots or sprouts. :(

It has to split open for the radicle to emerge. It could take 5 or 6 weeks. Sounds like you're getting close!

And you don't need toothpicks either. You can just put them in an appropriately sized vessel: a glass, an empty jelly jar, etc. I used a wine carafe. The neck was just the perfect size to sit the avocado pit in, and I made sure that water was touching the pit every day. It looked like a giant cork or rubber stopper.

  • Okay.... I will give them a few more weeks.... i'm so impatient!
  • I remember it took my mom MONTHS to get her seeds to sprout..... She had a nice little tree growing, about 2 ft tall..... then my rabbit Foo Foo ate it. She still won't shut up about it, to this day! lol
