Any Paralegals out there?
Okay, so I am looking to change my job and become a paralegal. Can you tell me about the job itself? Is it stressful, are there long hours, boring, good pay. Which field is good? Any information is helpful.
Thanks!!!
Re: Any Paralegals out there?
The job market for lawyers and paralegals right now is grim. Lots of candidates, not enough positions. We just hired a receptionist (small law firm) and about half of the applicants were people with paralegal certificates/education that can't find work elsewhere. From what I've heard, firms are cutting back on paralegals because the workload isn't there to support them, especially in transactional practices. In the practice areas that DO have the hours, IMO the job of a paralegal is shiitty - who wants to do litigation? Ugh.
Paralegals at medium/big firms have billable hour requirements that are close to an attorney's. Hours can be long, pay is good but you really do work for it. I hope modernbrideoc comes on. I think she was at work last night until 10pm, and that's not uncommon for her.
ModernOrangeBride here......Ditto everything JenandNeil said. I've been a paralegal for almost 9 years....not worth the stress, long hours and difficult personalities in the legal field.
Even if you're a super go-getter and don't mind the long hours and working with some awful personalities, I think the biggest dealbreaker for me would be the job market.
Call some recruiters and see what their take is.
You can even post on MM and see what they say about the job market for paralegals, at least new ones.
oh gawd, this would cause me to slit my wrists.
Thanks ladies. Its good to hear everyones feedback on the paralegal world. The school program that I would go to would guarantee me job placement, so that would be a perk!
What is the best field to go into that wouldn't be keeping me late at nights?

Definitely NOT litigation.

Yes, I would consider it pretty large. Firm wide we have over 250 attorneys.
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
I cannot believe a school program would guarantee their students job placement. Or if they do, have they told you what salary ranges they would be? Also, I know nobody wants to work the crazy hours, but with those hours comes a modicum of job security. The types of law that don't lend itself to litigation hours are the types that are generally transactional and have been hard hit by this economy.
Either way, good luck to you with whatever you decide to do.
And I totally apologized to "ModernOrangeBride" in the office. I can't believe how I totally f'd up her screen name.
It was fantastic.
And this thread was depressing as a mofo.

well, orange is the new black.
This is true. And ModernBrideOC is quite the trend-setter. She always comes into work dressed all cute. It depresses me how much I don't look as "put together" as she does (and even on our far and few between casual days).
Sadly being a paralegal can be depressing.
Right? I hang out with her all the time and I dress like I'm on the verge of homelessness. It's sad, actually. We'll go shopping together and I look like her traveling butler.
I feel your pain 10 years. We work on the same floor so I see her frequently. And I feel so below average when I see her cute outfits and shoes! Although I would kill myself in the heels she wears! It's flats for me everyday. I guess I could improve my outfits if I tried. But most days I just don't give a damn. LOL.
***waving like a crazy person***
HI JENN!!!! How are you and hubby? Miss you girl!!
PS: if you dont know my screenname, I was your wedding planner. haha!! Hope all is well!!!!!!
Holy cow JENNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!! Waving back madly!
How the heck are you??? And your baby!!! Oh my gosh PRECIOUS!
We're doing good. I've had some crazy work hours lately. And we're doing some serious remodeling that is about to drive me bat sh!t crazy. It's nice to finally get it done but oh my god. To have your house in a perpetual mess is beyond maddening.
JennandNeil - do you remember that you emailed me years ago asking about Jen and her wedding coordinator services before you hired her? What a small world! Yo Lilylover! lol
Holy cow I do remember you! And here I thought my home town was small but it seems Orange County is pretty small as well!
Anyway everything you said about Jenn was totally SPOT on. (I had to go back to make sure my memory was correct about who you were!) Our wedding was fabulous in great part because of her. Seriously.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! I had no idea D that you referred her to me!! Jenn, it is totally a small world eh? I am on wedding planning break for a little bit. I have someone REALLY special that I am taking care of now. You make me missing planning weddings! Yours was so unreal and I had a great time with you guys!
Tell Neil I said HI and best of luck with the remodel. There is nothing fun about having your house ripped to shreds and finding can-openers in your bathroom. haha!! (((HUGS)))
