"Green" grass fertilizer?

Is there anything I can put on the brown spots in the lawn to help them out a bit?  We have scorching hot heat during the day and that, mixed with a poor watering / mowing treatment from the previous owners, has caused major brown spots all over the lawn.

Also I know I can spray my weeds with vinegar, but can I do that on the grass' weeds also or will it kill the grass?

I really need to work on my brown thumb! TIA!

  • I could be totally wrong here, I do not know much about these kind of things, but isn't compost supposed to be the "green" fertilizer? Maybe your local nursery could tell you if compost would help.

  • Is there anything I can put on the brown spots in the lawn to help them out a bit?  I've heard dog urine can cause brown spots and rinsing the area can help.  We have scorching hot heat during the day and that, mixed with a poor watering / mowing treatment from the previous owners, has caused major brown spots all over the lawn.  You may want to aerate your lawn, in addition to proper watering and mowing (i.e., infrequent, deep watering and frequent mows leaving grass relatively long).  You can use natural fertilizers, but consider testing your soil first to determine lacking nutrients and talking to a master garderner to establish your lawn's needs so as to avoid excess fertilization (which leaves your lawn in runoff and over-fertilizes ground water).

Also I know I can spray my weeds with vinegar, but can I do that on the grass' weeds also or will it kill the grass?  The beauty of vinegar is that it kills plants and germs.  Unfortunately, it does so without discrimination.

  • Chicken poop will help.  Warning- it smells and your doggie will want to roll in it.

You may have to write off this summer of perfect grass and hope for a better year next summer. Make sure you aerate in the fall and water it a few times when we don't get a lot of snow in the winter.

  • Ditto the master gardener.  They will run a soil test and tell you what mineral you might be lacking.

I know that I've been need nitro so I've been sprinkling some coffee grounds and then giving a good soak but I don't know if that will help you.

  • Also brown patches in your grass can be a  sign of fungus or other issues.

Not sure if you have them in CO but out here (OH) brown patches can also be a sign of grubs.
