West Suburban for childbirth?

Hi ladies,

I am in the process of deciding which hospital would be the best location for the birth of my 2nd child.  I found an Alternative Birthing Center at West Suburban in Oak Park.  Anyone have any experience with this location or birthing center?  Thanks!

Re: West Suburban for childbirth?

  • Sorry I am not too much help but I did look into that birthing center.  It looked really nice online and right up our alley, but it was too far for us.  I am pregnant with my first baby and we are using Homefirst.  They are a group of "alternative" doctors that do homebirths.  We did a lot of research and are very happy with our choice.  I would recommend watching "The business of being born" a documentary done by Rickie Lake in 2007.  Good luck with your search, we had a hard time finding a birthing center in IL. Congrats too!
  • Thank you, Whitney!  I appreciate your help.  You'd think for Chicago being so big, there would be a lot more options!
  • I see Hillary Keiser at this practice (I'm assuming you mean West Suburban Midwives).  She is amazing.  She has been practicing for years, has an awesome bedside manner, and her partner CNM is extremely sweet, skilled, and knowledgeable as well.  And the nurses are phenomenal.

They have a birthing center, where they just added water birth options.  When my time comes (and I am TTA right now) I am going to choose there.  They also partner with so many hospitals and doctors throughout the suburbs that it is really a great option if that is not for you, or if you want a natural midwife birth but are not located near an alternative center.

I highly recommend this practice, and they came highly recommended to me (couldn't get a better recommendation than I received).  If you have any specific questions, let me know!

  • Thanks AMG!  I appreciate your help!  I had my first one with a CNM in a regular hospital room, but I would love to try a birthing center this time and possibly go for a water birth.  Do you know if recovery still happens with the staff nurses at the hospital or do you get to recover at the birthing center as well?  Again, thank you!  I had my first baby in WA state so I'm just trying to find out what my options are in the Chicago area.
  • Where are you located?  I'm in the Western Burbs and using a CNM and planning a waterbirth in the hospital, but I have a feeling it's too far out of the city for you at Rush Copley.
