In your professional opinion
, at what point do I need to start worrying about my health insurance card being MIA?
Everything was supposed to go into effect June 1st. I went on his dental and medical, and he went on my vision. The dental and vision cards all arrived within a week, and my employer's medical provider had time to mistakenly issue us both new cards and then retract that and take us both off and send me a notice to that effect. But I have yet to get anything from Matt's medical insurance proving that I am covered. Is this normal?
TIA!
Re: *hrchick*
Assuming he turned everything into his HR or benefits department before June 1, the answer to your question is "Not in my department!" If I found out that this was happening to one of our employees 23 days after the effective date, I'd be doing some research to find out where the ball was dropped.
Here's my process for figuring out where to go to resolve the problem:
What date did Matt turn the health insurance change form into HR/Benefits?
What date did HR/Benefits actually receive it (we have a secure "mailbox" outside our department and we only pull from it once a day, so we might not get it until the next day)
What date did it get processed in the insurance carrier's system by us (HR/Benefits)? Our process is to get it done within 3 business days from date of receipt. Every department is different.
The timing of all of these steps in the process can affect the date you get your cards. But the fact that you already got the other two cards and it's been so-o-o long since you received them leads me to believe that somewhere there was a disconnect on the health insurance change.
Most plans only allow a 30-day window after the date of the life event (marriage, birth, adoption, death, divorce, loss of coverage). So Matt definitely needs to follow up on this ASAP.
Good luck and let me know if any other questions arise or you think you're getting flaky info.
DISCLAIMER: I have no idea what the processes are that Matt's HR/Benefits department adheres to, so my advice may not apply in your situation.
Thanks!! He filled everything in at HR sometime the first week of June and handed it right to their HR person.
That part about Matt following up ASAP because of the 30-day window is what has me nervous. I keep harassing him about it and he keeps forgetting, or the HR girl is out that day, or... Grumble grumble. He is going to have an unhappy wife on his hands if it turns out that I'm uninsured until open enrollment!
