A little off-season, but...
What holiday dishes do you dread? Your MIL's casserole? Your uncle's mince meat pie?
Re: A little off-season, but...
DH's dad's side host doesn't cook, like at all, so everything is purchase and meh.
DH's mom's side does an ALL DAY celebration starting with breakfast that's nothing special, right down to the mushrooms that are steamed, think casserole dish of gray mush disk. Then there is dinner which ALWAYS consists of over-cooked dry beef. Yum! The green veg is usually overcooked too, but the mashed potatoes are good, and I've usually finished my own bottle, or two, of champagne by then, so I don't really mind.
Her sweet potato casserole. She always seems to forget I don't like sweet potatoes so there is never a normal potato dish unless I make it.
The jellied cranberry sauce from the can! EW my grams and several others seem to think it's great.
When DH and I host Thanksgiving I always make homemade cranberry sauce and everyone actually eats it! IT'S SO much better! AND doesn't look like a tin can jello mold!
it would be sacrilege not to have the canned cranberry jelly at our families' thanksgivings. you can have the real stuff too, but the canned is always available!
This, 100%!! My MIL is a fantastic cook, but this gets me every time.
Confession:
I'm a classically trained chef, and I love cranberry sauce from the can. It has to retain the shape of the can for me to eat it. Flame away.
i never really had a good green bean casserole until i made it myself. (im not vain, just honest)
i make it with fresh blanched green beans, sauteed mushrooms and garlic and cream of mushroom soup, lots of parmesan and asiago cheese, i top it with the classic fried onions and sliced mushrooms for garnish.
my FMIL makes it with canned green beans and soup. its mushy, except for the almost burned onions on top and bland save the salt... and she wouldnt think of letting me make it.
other than that everyone makes great food.
