DH and I love our farmers market, and there is a family there that owns a local farm and they sell eggs, chicken, beef, and pork. I've talked to them a lot about their farming practices and it's free-range, grass-fed, and if they have to be supplemented, like the chickens, it's with non-GMO feed. The meat is pretty expensive, but I feel like it's worth it, so we usually buy one or two things each time, and always a carton of eggs. Last time we were there, the grandmother told me that they're 'taking orders for cows' as she put it. lol. H and I have talked about it and think it would be worth it for us to purchase 1/4 cow for the beef, especially since they take orders for how you want the meat split up. They are charging $5.00/lb. So my question is, do you any of you buy beef raised in a similar fashion, and if so, how much is it per pound? I feel like $5.00 is a good buy, but I've never compared. TIA!
Re: Anyone buy beef in bulk?
Sounds good. Last year ours was $4.50/lb for a 1/4 - I imagine it could be $5/lb this year.
We split a 1/4 with friends last year and got 45 lbs. It has lasted us from October until now (we still have 1 roast, 4 burgers, 1pk cubed beef and 2lb ground beef left). We eat red meat generally 1ce/week. If you eat it more often you might want to go for the whole 1/4 otherwise maybe split it.
We bought a quarter last fall. It was $600 for 100 lbs (this year it's up to $650). So yeah, $5 sounds like a great deal to me.
