bell pepper question

What the heck are we doing wrong?  We have bell peppers, zuc, beans, tomatoes, cukes, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots in the garden this year. We have onions and potatoes in giant pots. watermelon and canteloupe in a separate spot. Everything is growing fabulously...except the darn peppers.  They've been in the ground since memorial weekend and are barely 4 inches tall.  are we watering too much? they get full sun all day (until about 4ish, maybe 3) is that too much? why is everything else doing so well and the peppers are sucking?  I'm bummed. I love peppers.

i've decided they're just fickle.  i have a couple that're big and bushy and happy with multiple peppers, and a couple next to them in identical sun and soil conditions that have all of 4 little leaves.

  • I have three plants doing fabulous and the other 25 (different varieties) are taking there time. I think they are just very fickle as stated before. Give them time, they will grow.
  • peppers really like the heat and are tougher to grow in the northern states
  • I'm in GA and have 2 red, 1 yellow, and 4 green bell pepper plants that are about to take over! I think it really has more to do with climate than anything because my mom has trouble with hers losing flowers and she's Mid-Atlantic.
  • I had a devil of a time with them last year, in full hot hot Western Oklahoma sun and have decided they are just fickle, as you stated. The neighboring plot in our apartment complex did very well. Literally a few feet away, nothing different.

Huh.  I wouldn't call them fickle, based on my experience in NorCal.  The term I'd use is "prolific."  It must be the climate.  Or maybe they need the late afternoon sun?  Ours are shaded until about 11 am and then get blasted with sun until the evening.

  • We are still waiting to get a final product off of our Bell Peppers, we have harvested plenty off of all of our other veggies. I live in FL, they tend to grow only when the soil dries out for a day and then it rains or I fertilize. They are exposed to the sun all day.
