HI,
I just want to verify some knowledge, if you know about this...
My nephew has an undescended testicle, he is going to be 2 in Oct. ?My SIL just changed Dr.s and wants me to go with her to her new pedi appt on Fri.
What I learned in school is the sooner the better to have the surgery. ?One of my instructors said to have the surgery around 3 mos. ?Everything I have read, says to have the surgery around 1 if it is still undescended. ?
My SIL's old pedi told her to wait until nephew was 2, so she waited, they sent her to a urologist (not a pediatric one by the way) who told her to wait until nephew is 4. ?SIL called her old pedi who told her "I sent you to that urologist so someone else could tell you to wait". ?When SIL questioned her she told her "Ai mommy stop worrying he will be OK", when SIL told me that I almost flipped out.
SO I am going to the appt with her on Friday. ?One of my instructors referred this pedi to me & I gave it to SIL. ?You can see that it is still undescended just by looking at him, one side of his scrotum looks "normal", the other side is completely flat. ?She has had ultrasounds done too.
So my question is, is what I have read correct in that the surgery should be done sooner rather than later?
Thanks for listening to me ramble, I look forward to your answers.?
Re: Nestie Nurses/Dr.s (kind of long)
Emily is going to be the one to give the best answer. She does God's work, I run like heck from anything to do with peds.
But a quick check online tells me you are basically correct. Surgery takes place around 12 months of age.
Here is a good source for info:

I have a freind whose son had this same problem and her doctor recommended surgery before the age of two to stay away from any infertility problems in the future.
If you are in the Pasadena area, I can recommend a great pedi urologist. Both Marina and I have seen him and think he is great.
Just to chime in. My son had the same problem and his pedi said to wait till 1 year to see if it came on it's own, if not we would do surgery then. We were lucky and it decended already.
Can't believe a dr. would speak like that to a concerned parent. Glad she is not going back to that dr!
First off I am not a Pedi nurse but I would run away from any Doctor that would be so callous re: a concerned mother's feelings.
I do hope that she finds one that will appropriately address her very valid concerns.
Hi there,
My son also had an undescended testicle at birth and when I took him for his 2 week check up that was one of the "to watch" things on his pedi's list for his first year. She also said that if it hadn't descended by his 1st birthday then he needed surgery to do so. By 13 months it still hadn't descended and we decided to have the surgery done. Not having it done would have put my son at risk for infertility AND testicular cancer as an adult so there was absolutely no question that the surgery was necessary. He had it done at an outpatient center just outside of Huntington Memorial hospital, the surgery itself lasted roughly an hour and by the next day he was up and walking about as if nothing had happened. He's three now, you can still see a difference in his testicles but it's not as pronounced as it was before the surgery. Good luck, if you have any questions let me know!

Definitely needs to be done sooner rather than later. Get the heck away from that other doctor and get your nephew to a peds urologist.
He will probably need to have the surgery fairly soon as they generally recommend not waiting until much later than 2 due to later risks of infertility and even testicular cancer.
