question about lavendar and shade

I've always loved lavendar but the only place I can safely plant it is in a flower bed that is in the shade. Do y'all think it'd be ok to test out a plant there or should I just find another safe spot for it that's in full sun?

Thank you for any input!

Re: question about lavendar and shade

  • Lavender is happiest is full sun.  My happiest lavender plant gets a full afternoon in direct sunlight.
  • My lavender gets a lot of sun. It's planted on the west side of my house where there are no trees. It gets sun in the evenings. It's happy there.

  • I don't think lavender will like the shade.  And, if it "lives" I doubt it will bloom much if at all there.  Especially if it's shady and poor drainage.  You'll have *much* better luck in a sunny spot.
  • I have three lavender plants in full shade, but given the amount of sun we get the patio is still a "bright" spot, if that makes sense. One bush has never bloomed, but is large and full. Another that isn't really a bush blooms from early spring all the way into the fall. Another type just really isn't loving the shade. To sum it up- I think that it depends on the type of lavender.

My lavendar does fine in partial shade.  But then New Mexico partial shade is still very intense and hot.
