Overwhelmed by Smartphone choices - Have AT&T

I'm in the market for a new phone, and am thinking of getting a smartphone or at the very least a better texting phone.  Right now I have an LG Shine, which I've never liked. At a minimum, I'd like a good calendar and better texting ability.

I know the IPhone4 just came out, but don't think I need something that advanced.  I have a couple of questions.  What's the internet security like for the smartphones?  Do you have to buy special internet security like Norton or are their apps for that?  What non-Iphone phones do you recommend?  Is ther a certain amount of memory I should be looking for?  I went to a smaller ATT store the other day and the Motorola Blackflip seemed promising, and I'm going to go to a bigger store today to check out the HTC Aria?  Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I live in the UK and we have different phone versions...but when I lived in the US, I would go to CNet.com for phone reviews...they tell it like it is and regular people also put in their two sense.  I know the latest HTC phones have gotten great reviews.

  • Thanks.  I'll check out that website.
  • No, you don't need any security software for smartphones. Most phones will have enough internal memory to hold all of your apps. If you're taking a ton of photos/videos, almost all phones have SD slots and you can buy a mini SD card up to several gigs of data.

The HTC Aria is a nice smartphone, but since you mentioned texting a lot I would not recommend it because the screen is very small and I imagine it would be frustrating to text on that small of a touchscreen.

For a good texting phone, I would recommend the Pantech Link or the Palm Pixi. I think the Backflip is just okay.

For a smartphone, if you want all of the whizbang, you can't go wrong with an iPhone or a Blackberry 9700.

  • I have an iPhone (3GS) and don't know why anyone would choose not to get one :)

This totally made me LOL.  I was in the store today like a deer in headlights.  It didn't help that nobody came over to help me.  I just walked out.

  • I switched from a regular cell phone to my iPhone 3G (just got the iPhone 4) and will never go back..

After doing some more research and going to a bigger store, where someone actually helped me, I think I am going to get the Iphone (but not the new one though).  I found out I can get the 16G at Walmart for $97 vs. the 8G at ATT.

  • The AT&T stores are pretty crappy.  I would highly recommend Best Buy--they have a large selection and DH and I have both found the staff there to be very helpful.

I had a Shine until I got my iPhone 4 yesterday.  It is awesome.  I think an iPhone, either new or older will be a good way to go.
