HUge tomoto plants but no fruit

My tomato plants are taller than me.. they seem to be growing out of control but not a single tomato yet

This is my 1st time planting in the ground, usu I plant them in a pot.

Are they plants supposed to get over 5.5 feet tall? I had better luck growing them in containers..

Re: HUge tomoto plants but no fruit

  • Tomato plants can get pretty huge! Don't worry about their size, just be prepared to have more fruit :) The bigger the plant, the more fruit it can make. Sometimes having an excess of nitrogen in the soil can make for really vigorous plant growth without fruit appearing, while a plant that is root bound and ready to die sets fruit as a "last resort" (setting seed). So, if you're fertilizing pretty heavily then cut back on that.

  • In addition to not over fertilizing, I was going to suggest pruning it back some.
  • I agree with the previous poster in regards to nitrogen as well as proper pruning.  You might do a soil test to check your pH level.  Some tomato plants prefer slightly acidic soil so you might check and see if your soil is more on the alkaline side.  You can make it more acidic by using a diluted vinegar solution - you can search online for proper amounts, or other ways to make your soil more acidic.
  • It's getting at least 6ish hours of direct like, right?  It's not growing tall in order to reach for light, correct?  Are you growing anything else around it?  Is that flowering/setting fruit (aka: Do you think you have a soil deficiency)?

I would say it's not really "normal" to have a 5'+ tomato plant with zero buds.  It's been my experience that the tomatoes flower as they grow up...so first you get tomatoes on the bottom of the plant and then they move up from there (you don't get more tomatoes on the bottom).

  • There are tomato plants that are what they call "determinant" plants and another type that they call "indeterminant" plants.  The determinant plants grow to a fixed height and put out most of the tomatoes all at once and then slows down until it just stops producing.  These plants are usually shorter and can be known as "bush" tomato plants.  The indeterminate tomato plants continue to grow in height throughout the season.  These are the ones that you will want to make sure to stake or put in tomato cages to support all the weight of the fruit.  They will continue to produce tomatoes basically until it is killed off by frost.  These types can get 10 feet tall.    I have 3 indeterminate tomato plants that are getting pretty huge but also have no fruit.  I just started seeing flower buds a couple days ago and they are in full sun.  I think it all depends on when you start them or put them in the ground and what types of plant they are since they all have different maturity dates.

Also, pruning your indeterminate tomato plants will ensure that you get a continuous supply of tomatoes all season long.  Here's an article that explains how:  http://www.finegardening.com/how-to/articles/pruning-tomatoes.aspx

  • I have the same problem with my Tomato plants growing rather large, but not producing fruit. I have them growing in big pots where they get a lot of light.

I have seen several blossoms, but the blossoms are drying out and dying, without producing any tomatos.
