1 or 2 composters?

Do we need more than one composter?  We are looking into getting a compost tumbler, but I know you are supposed to let the compost "cook" for awhile and not add to it, what do you do with your food scraps during the cooking period?  Should we get a second composter so we have one we can always add to?

also, are you supposed to time your compost to be finished during certain seasons (i.e. spring/early summer when we plant our garden?)

Re: 1 or 2 composters?

  • We have a tumbler and a regular one.

I don't know how people do it with just a tumbler.  We filled it and then have mostly let it sit (well, we turn it, but haven't added to it.)

I think I've decided I prefer the regular one, but I actually like turning it.

ETA: We don't time our compost either.  The tumbler we'll probably spread whenever it's ready.  The other we use a bit at a time through the year and a bunch in the spring. I add to it all year.

  • We have 2 to avoid the situation you've described.

If you just have 1, you can get/made a screen to help you sort out the finished compost from the unfinished stuff.  IMO, that's a lot of work.

We don't time our compost.  If it's "done" late fall we may go ahead & put it in the garden beds so we're all ready for spring or we may just wait.  If it's done in the summer, we may just add it as top dressing to give the plants a bit of a boost.  We aren't scientific about it.

  • I have 2 trashcan composters for that reason.
