Lawyer?

Okay, so I am fortunate to live in the state of Oregon, (most of the time). We have a decent liberal jurisdiction. However, my name change process is all very simple, except for the small part where I have to go before the judge, and pleade my case. So, I am curious should I cross my 't;s' and and do my 'i;s' by hiring a lawyer to go to this 5 minute hearing with me? Am I just be paranoid? Any guidance would be fantastic!

Re: Lawyer?

  • I am just about the most "cross my T's and dot my I's" person you could come by so i understand where your question is coming from....but you definitely dont need an attorney for the hearing.  It will be quick and painless (aside from some nerves) and no need to waste the $$ just to have someone sit next to you.

Now, if the judge turns you down (which they won't), then you would want to hire someone to represent you on the appeal.

    When the hearing set for?

  • I agree. Here in Seattle it was painless and would have be really funny if I had had a lawyer.

  • The hearing hasn't been set yet. I didn't want to start the paperwork yet, if in the long run I was going to get a lawyer

  • We talked with our lawyer about possibly having him do our name change. He suggested we have him do it to eliminate the hassle, but for a $2k savings we're willing to have some hassle, so we'll try it first ourselves.

He did say that his impression is that some judges (in our area) are easier on people bringing name changes themselves than they are on people using a lawyer... neither here nor there, really, but I thought that was interesting.

Edited to add: What we looked into would have been having the lawyer do ALL the work-- all the paperwork, posting the legal notice in the local paper, taking care of court fees, etc, etc. Not just the hearing part.
