help please! Chicago suburbs...

Hi ladies!

I'm coming up to Chicago for a long weekend with some girlfriends this fall, and looking for some suggestions...

We are going to be doing some shopping out in the suburbs, and would like to stay at hotel further out (so it's cheaper than staying downtown), but that is within a short walking distance from an L stop so that we don't have to drive downtown.  We'd like for it to be in a decent area.

What areas/hotels would you all suggest? thanks in advance for the help!

Re: help please! Chicago suburbs...

  • I'm not sure about specific hotels, but I would check out the O'Hare area ones.  Most of them have shuttles to the Blue Line stop.  You may want to check out www.transitchicago.com for route info.  (Check the Trip Planner section for specifics from "Point A" to "Point B".  You may also want to check out www.metrarail.com.  The Metra is the passenger railway.  (Vs the el that is the elevated train)

     Hope that helps

  • Other than the O'Hare area, there aren't any suburbs immediately outside of Chicago that are good areas to stay in. The O'Hare hotels have shuttles to the Blue Line, which will take you down to the Loop. Several O'Hare hotels are within walking distance of the Rosemont Blue Line stop.

If you want to stay out in the suburbs in a less risky area, consider taking the Metra downtown. It's the commuter train that runs into the city from the suburbs. Weekend fares are fairly cheap - I think it's either $5 or $10 for an unlimited ride pass on Saturdays and Sundays. Depending on which Metra line you take, it will put you into one of two train stations downtown, and from either station it's about a 10 minute walk to Michigan Ave. Check out www.metrarail.com to see maps and get an idea of what towns have train stations, and then look up hotels in those towns. Generally, as you get closer to the city you get the lesser up-scale suburbs.

  • The Carleton Hotel in Oak Park is walking distance to the green line.  Plus Oak Park has its own sites to see, like the Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio, plus shops and great restaurants.  However, I don't know how cheap it will be.

Try travelzoo.com for hotel deals--they've got some great ones.  We recently stayed downtown at the Marriott on North Michigan for $139 night.
