Wasteful contests

It drives me crazy when I see these wasteful things..

Like on the news today there was something about how in chicago, they made a 200lb cheesecake.  I know it is in good fun, but part of me is disturbed that so many resources went into something that is for the most part going to go to waste.  If not this contest, the ones where they made a 500lb hamburger or other ridiculous stuff.

Not only just for the environment either.. there are people going hungry in our country, people who could use the food or the money spent.  Again, not to rain on anyone's parade but there are so many serious issues going on that could use all that money and manpower.

Re: Wasteful contests

  • I get annoyed when i see commercials for that TV show "Minute to Win It", especially the contest where they have to empty a whole box of Kleenex, or unroll and entire TP roll.  It's bad enough that they do it on the show but then they encourage people to practice at home too.

  • I think there are a lot of assumptions going on there.

Do you know for sure what this 200 lb cheesecake is going for? Is it for sure going to be wasted? How do you know for sure they aren't donating it to charity? Or...I don't know, auctioning it off and using that money for a charity?

Also--no one is 100% charitable all the time. Okay maybe someone like Mother Theresa or Jesus--but we can't all be champions. But how can you assume that the people who are "wasting manpower" on making a cheesecake for fun in this moment don't spend at least a part of the rest of their time or money giving to hungry people? Perhaps it's a significant amount.

I guess I don't really see it as a black and white issue--I'm sure there are things that you do that others could say are a waste of time or money--but you do other things that directly balance those things out.

    DEAD

  • I definitely am going on assumptions, but it would be nice too if they advertised that profits or extra food would be going to charity too, to set a good example.  I'm not trying to be mean or be a party pooper about the event, but there are some things that seem a little unnecessarily wasteful.  It is just a promotional thing and they are giving people free cheesecake all day, it is to celebrate a company's anniversary.

BTW I looked it up and the cheesecake is 2,000 lbs (not 200!)!

  • Have you seen the latest and greatest? ABC has a new show called Downfall, and the idea of this contest is that contestants are competing for something and if they don't get the answer right or win whatever piece it is, the item gets pushed from a skyscraper.

While I realize that no one is perfect, and that I do my share of wasting, even when I try hard not to... this is beyond my comprehension. Why not donate it to a cause?

ABC premieres action-packed game show ?Downfall? on Tuesday, June 22, at 9 p.m.The twist here is that it's played on the roof of a downtown Los Angeles highrise building, 10 stories above the ground. And players can exercise the "Friend on the Belt" option if they're stuck for an answer, potentially sending that person over the side of the building if they don't get it.During the course of the six hourlong episodes, contestants compete to win $1 million plus a slew of prizes such as a grand piano, a car or a trip to Paris.Contestants must quickly answer a series of trivia questions and beat the clock in seven rounds. As ABC explains it: "Fabricated facsimiles of all prizes will be placed on the largest conveyor belt ever seen on TV, with a pile of cash at the end that ranges from $5,000 to $1 million. In each round, players will try to answer all the questions before their prizes and cash go over the edge, off the roof and crashing 100 feet to the street below. If the cash goes over the side of the building, the game is over and that player is eliminated."As for lifelines: "If a player begins to struggle for answers to the game?s category-based questions, there will be two ways to back up the belt: 'Surrender a Personal Possession' (where the player offers a personal material possession for the conveyor belt and risks its being dropped over the edge and destroyed); or the 'Friend on the Belt' option (where players? own friends or family members, such as their grandmother, can be placed on the belt to help them find the answers). If they don?t beat the clock, this person risks going over the side of the building just like the previous prizes -- but in this case wearing a decelerator harness to soften the fall."

  • Wow... this thread makes me really glad not to have tv. These shows sound STUPID, and I'm not talking environmentally.

Re the Downfall show, its facsimiles of the items. It doesn't really sound like anything is harmed or really wasted, other than a cheap copy of the item and as far as waste goes, that's not really bad.

As for the giant cheesecake, I assume it gets eaten! I'm not even a cheesecake fan, but that would be such a waste! I figure that everyone in the crowd there gets a serving and then maybe the rest to a food bank??

Me neither--The trick is--I only watch premium cable, and about three channels on regular. I wish they had "Pick and Pay" cable. It would be glorious. I'd only have about 10 very specific channels....:::sighs with the vision of that::: The BS shows are generally in between the very few good shows on network tv. Blech.
