Raised beds or ground planting?

I know I'm a bit late but I have a few plants (vegetables) to get into the ground today. They are all growing nicely but need more space. I've been debating between raised beds and or just putting them in the ground.

Thoughts? Experiences? Advice?

Re: Raised beds or ground planting?

  • We did a large raised bed and a few extra large pots. I love the raised bed that DH built me, but the plants in pots are doing much better than those in the raised bed.

We bought huge, attractive pots at Walmart for $20 & $25.

It really depends on the area that you live in. If we were still back home, in MD... I would do a in ground bed because the soil is rich up there.

  • I think it really depends on your area. I live in GA with the awful red clay, so our only option really was raised beds. DH had to use a pick-axe just to get them set, I can't imagine if we had tried to garden in it.

Are you planning on doing a fall crop of veggies as well, or just the ones you have now? How many do you have to plant?  Since it's already almost July, I would just pot them and try for a full garden next season if you don't have many.

I can't fathom pick axing dirt!

I live in upstate NY, decent soil. I might do fall plants but who knows....I might get moved to plant more hehehehe. We had a rough May and June so I'm behind but really want to plant.

I have one large tomato plant, one smaller one, 7 smaller green peppers and one pumpkin.

  • If your soil is good and you have decent draininage, and don't have a raised bed ready to go, put 'em in the ground.

If you have bad soil and drainage, and especially if you have a raised bed to use, go for that option.

I usually do a mix. Whatever doesn't fit in the raised bed goes in the front yard.

  • We opted for raised beds. I've never had much luck with pots, and this seems to be working better for us.  If you end up going with the beds, there's a really good book called "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible" by Edward C. Smith that I've found really helpful.
