Romantic Getaway

Hello all. Me & my husband will be heading down that way to celebrate our 1 year anniversary.  We want to go to one of the beaches in North Carolina. We are on a tight budget and would like some where that has alot of things to do/see. We plan on coming the weekend after Labor Day. Any suggestions????

Re: Romantic Getaway

  • We like the northern part of the Outer Banks (Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Duck, etc.) because there is a lot do to in that area.  The beach is great and there is a good amount of local restaurants, shops, grocery store, movies, putt-putt, etc.

Last year we rented our house through VRBO.  This year we went through a rental agency, which I have found to be more expensive.  But I would look now to book your house since things fill up quickly.

  • Ditto what EA suggested.  The only part of the OBX that I've been to was the same area she suggested, and I would definitely go back.  Just enough things to do that you aren't bored, but enough off the beaten path that you can have a laid back vacay if you want one.  I too would suggest checking out vrbo.

    Good luck!!

  • Thank you ladies. I went on the VRBO site and I think I found a place to go. Its in Calabash, NC and its called the Luxury Beach Love Nest. Have either one of you heard of it or stayed there?

  • That area is on the southern coast of NC, not the Outer Banks.  I personally have never been there (so take the rest of this with a grain of salt) but heard it is significantly less built up.  So if you want a lot of activities and things to do besides laying on the beach, you may not find as much there.

And just for a reference point, the northern part of the Outer Banks that I was talking about earlier has probably 3 grocery stores in the area.  I was warned that the less built up areas may only have a corner grocery store and not a local chain "big" grocery store.  Also they have very few restaurants and other shops/activities.  Not that this means it is a bad area, but just so you are prepared for the differences.

The only other area I know that is definitely built up like the northern section of the Outer Banks is Wilimington, but it sounds like you fight a good bit of crowds there too!

  • We just stayed at the Inn on Pamlico Sound in Buxton, NC for our one year anniversary and it was gorgeous.

  • I don't know about the town of Calabash specifically, but that area is decently built up.  It's right over the border from Myrtle Beach.  That's the area where we used to go when I was growing up and it was nice because the beaches weren't super crowded, but you were close enough to Myrtle to drive down if you wanted to go out.  We used to stay right north of Calabash in Ocean Isle.
