Southern California Nesties, Where Do You Buy Organic Meat/Poultry/Fish?

i live in Orange County, Ca, and would like to buy organic meat, poultry, etc.  where should i go?  right now, i purchase my meat, poultry, etc. from whole foods.  is that my best bet?

thanks!

  • Try your local Farmer's Market.  www.localharvest.org and www.eatwild.org are good places to find them.  I bet if you Google your city + Farmer's Market you'll find a lot.  Your markets will have fresh, local meat and poultry, and if you're in CA probably fish.  You can ask the farmers how they raise their animals, and develop a relationship with the people that grow your food.  There's no way of holding a food producer more accountable for their actions than that.

Actually, there's a real dearth of actual local meat.  The best luck I've had is the Santa Monica farmer's market, which is the best in So Cal.  WF only has stuff from Northern Cal, though that's better than nothing.  I hope OC is better!

aspade - unfortunately, i don't think OC is better.  i think OC is good about local produce, but not meat (maybe poultry, but even that is kinda lacking).  oh well, at least i have whole foods.  like you said, it's better than nothing!
  • CFB, what city do you live in, in OC?  Pretty much any city has a Farmer's Market, I refuse to believe that in the greatest food-producing state in the U.S., none of these markets have meat:

Well, supergreen, I know you're trying to be helpful (and optimistic), but I moved down here from San Francisco seven months ago, and aside from one CSA that doesn't come anywhere near me and the Santa Monica farmer's market, I've had zero "luck."  I've been sick about the lack of local meat since moving.  I was SO spoiled in SF.  You can get local eggs and lots of beautiful produce (though if you ask me, it still pales against SF), but meat is scarce.  WF thinks beef from near the Oregon border is local.  I haven't given up, but it's a sad state of affairs!  I truly do hope that the OC might be better.

Aspade, I'm in LA County too, and I thought maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.  (Granted I haven't tried very hard yet, but I really thought it would be easier!)  Our nearest Farmer's Market was a big disappointment.  I did find a CSA that would let you do meat add-ons, but pick-up for our area is Saturday mornings and we go out of town so often that it isn't feasible for us right now.

    Is the CSA Abundant Harvest?
