Nikon Cameras

hi I have never posted on here before but I wanted to see if anyone else on here uses Nikon SLR cameras. I have the Nikon D3000. I absolutely love it and I'm in the market to buy some new lenses for it. There are so many out there and Im not sure about the differences between them all. Can anyone help me out with the specs and what it means. Or can anyone recommend some good lenses and why. Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it!

Re: Nikon Cameras

  • We just bought the same camera about a month ago and are just starting out with lenses.  We bought a kit so it came with a 55mm aoom lens.  We purchased a wide angle lens (great for landscapes), a telephoto lens (for far away objects), a macro lens (for close ups of things like flowers, coins, etc.) and a set of filters:  UV (for using outdoors), starburst (to make light sources have 6 points on them), polarizing filter, and one for indoors to make flourescent lighting look better.  We are in the process of buying a 200mm zoom lens also.  Here are a few sites to help you.  Just a tip:  buy on Ebay, you'll save alot of money.

  • thank you so much for the information! I really appreciate it! :)
  • got the same one. love it.. we are using the lens that came w it..
  • Its a great camera! I love it too! Im so attached to it!  :)
  • I shoot with a D300, but, we have an old D40x body here, too (the predecessor to the D3000/D5000). The most important thing you need to know about the D3000 is that it doesn't have an auto focus motor in the camera body, so you won't be able to auto focus with lenses that don't have a built in motor. Ken Rockwell has a very comprehensive chart on Nikon lens compatibility.

What do you want to / like to shoot? That will help with recommendations.

  • hi, thanks so much! I will check that web-site out! I really love shooting animals and people. Any recommendations? :) thanks again!

  • I was going to suggest KenRockwell.com as well.  Be careful buying on eBay...you can get some good deals, for sure, but they won't always be covered even by the manufacturer's warranty if you have issues later.  Personally, I'd rather spend a little bit more when buying something big and have peace of mind to know, at the very least, that I'm getting the manufacturer's warranty with it.

I will say that my favorite lens purchase for my Nikon (D90) is the nifty 50. 50mm 1.8 lens. It's around $100 and it's great. No zoom built in or anything but it's a good length for a lot of portraits and that sort of thing. When I took photography classes in college, we initially were only allowed to use a 50mm because it forced us to move around and not rely on the camera to get zooms....I don't think that really translates to real world photos, but it's a good, standard length, even on a digital crop.

    Have fun shopping!!!

Just make sure you are buying throgh a store that is an authorized Nikon dealer, not some regular joe selling a stolen camera.  Check the seller profile and only purchase from one with very high feedback.  That's exactly what we did and we have a warranty.

^Won't AF on a D3000. Primes are great for portraits, as you can get nice wide apertures with them that allow you to blur out backgrounds. The new 35mm f/1.8 Nikkor is popular with the entry level Nikons- a good length for DX cameras for indoor photography. There's a 50mm f/1.4 that's built for the entry level line with an AF motor, too, it's a little more expensive and a nice lens that acts as a short telephoto lens on a DX camera (flattering for faces, too tight for full body portraits in most homes). The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is a very popular budget zoom for portraits.

There's lots of fabulous glass out there for more $$$$$, if you want top of the line suggestions, but, it sounds like these will suit you well! HTH!

  • I cant thank you guys enough! Your information is so helpful! :) I'll let you know what I decide on. If I have anymore questions, which I'm sure I will I'll come find you guys! :)
