between the birds and squirrels, i've resorted to picking my tomatoes when they're deep orange.

THIS IS IT!!!!  Because the bugs have a black V on their back.  

How can I avoid them????

i think there are some commercial insect killers (seven is one brand, i think) that are safe to use on tomatoes, but i'm honestly weirded out by putting pesticides on something i want to eat.  the adults fly, so they're harder to get rid of.  i had some assassin bugs on another plant, and i just kept putting them on my tomatoes until my leaf-footed bugs disappeared.

I am opposed to pesticides.  How can I fight this bugs organically?

a few websites suggested safers soap, which i tried, to no avail.  a couple others suggested orange oil, but i haven't tried that.  otherwise, you have to catch and squish the lil buggers.
