Church anyone?

Mike and I have been wanting to check out churches. It's something we've been "meaning to do" for like a year, but I'm trying to actually follow through now. He was raised Catholic; I was raised Lutheran, but we're really looking for something more modern. Basically, we just want something that is Christian-based but focuses more on values and morality than adhering strictly to scripture, if that makes sense.

We're in NW Phx, so any place in Phoenix or Glendale would be great. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Church anyone?

  • we go to cornstone in chandler and just love it. we've been going there since we were married and altho we dont live in chandler anymore we dont mind the drive at all. i emailed our church when we moved about sister or affiliated churches in the phx/glendale area and they referred us to the vineyard church - its off peoria and 63rd ave. we attended a few services and liked it but cornerstone just feels more like home to us.

  • I've been to cornerstone too when I used to live down in Awhatukee and enjoyed it, maybe I'll go check out vineyard.  DH and I have been kinda hunting around too. We live in central Phx, so we've been going back and forth between Northwest Church of Christ and North Phoenix Baptist Church.  DH was raised baptist and I was Christian.  Sorry I don't know how to make them clicky..... but I like NW because it's a little smaller like the churches I grew up with and I like the music (no instruments, but the songs) its off 51st ave and union hills.  North Phx is off of Central and Bethany Home and that church is massive, but DH likes it a bit more.  They have a lot more "extracurricular" activities I guess although NW has some as well.  So we're still kinda bouncing around.

  • Thanks ladies! I'll check those out.  :)
  • What kind of churches are these?  I'm assuming mostly non-denominational but I find a lot of non-denoms are really Baptist churches and that's the one church I really don't want to attend.  No offense to Baptists, I just disagree with a few things with them.  I was raised Catholic and usually try to attend Catholic mass but occasionally it's nice to get a breather from the strict, scripted mass so I'd definitely like to check some of these out!
  • I went to Cornerstone for about 2.5 years and now DH and I attend East Valley Bible Church and we have also checked out Missio Dei (which is a very small church that meets in an elementary school)

  • On this side of town there is Calvary (right by your house chica!) and there is the massive CCV, but a drive for you fo sho...

I am into the itty bitty church myself.  My neighbors (the perfect ones) go to Living Stream and they love it.

I think it's hard to recc a church bc you have to shop to find your comfort zone...

  • thanks for the recommendation, we'll give living stream a visit too after we come back from the holiday weekend.

Yeah, we've thought about Calvary... something about it just doesn't appeal to me, although I can't really pinpoint what it is. Maybe it's the electric billboard that tells you how Jesus died for you, as you drive down the 17... It just doesn't seem like it would be my style. I'm kind of hoping for something with more of a neighborhood feel. There is a little lutheran church tucked into a neighborhood near us that we might check out if we can't find anything else, but I'm hoping we can find something non-denominational that suits us. I guess I just need to get my butt in gear and start attending some services to see what I like.
