I love these flowers. We're having our landscaping redone and I'm doing all the planting when it's finished. My mom keeps giving me grief for wanting to put in Peonies because they require ants.
Does anyone hate them for this reason? Mothers ranting is getting old.
Re: Peonies...
I've never heard anyone mentioning this as a reason not to get them.
I love peonies too, right now I'm trying to figure out how to get a cutting from my grandmothers peony (it was originally a cutting from her mother's plant).
Don't be put off because of ants. My blooms had a few ants on them but nothing to be concerned about. If you plan on cutting the blooms before bringing them into the house, I would advise you to dunk the flowers in a bucket of water for about 20 minutes to get rid of any unwanted insects. The flowers lasted a week inside my house.
Good luck!

My MIL hates them because of the ants.
I honestly have six different varieties in my flower beds- two from my mom, two from each of my Grandmas (I dug up some of the roots from each a couple years ago in late summer and they thankfully survived). I Love them.
I do have them near the front door and patio door though.... no problems with ants after putting them in (actually did have problems prior to putting them in!)
My mom always said that the ants were eating the aphids off of them. So, they were beneficial to the plant by removing smaller pests that would eat the plant itself.
Anyway, don't let the ants deter you.
I have ant hills right up next to my house for no reason at all, but they never seem to make their way inside. This baffles me because the last two apartments I had were riddled with ants in a bad way, but in our house, they never come in to bother us. I could care less what ants do as long as they don't come in. Once they are in, they start stealing my food and then it's war.
