Tuesday Poll: What is your favorite holiday and why?

Mine: Thanksgiving, because I get to be with my family and reminded of the things that I am thankful for and take for granted, Cake, and it is in the FALL... my favorite season of year. Valentine's Day and Christmas are a close 2nd.

Re: Tuesday Poll: What is your favorite holiday and why?

  • Easter.  One word - jellybeans.  Plus it means summer is getting closer!!

  • St. Patrick's Day because it's my birthday! 4th of July is a close second- you can't go wrong with BBQ, beer and fireworks.

  • For me it's Christmas.  We get together with DH's family on Christmas Eve at his sisters house and then on Christmas my family and most of DH's family come over to our house.  It's the one time of the year (usually) that we all get together.  Also the decorations are very pretty ~ I have way too many Christmas decorations, but I just can't help myself Smile

  • New Year's, I guess b/c it's about starting over, looking toward the future.

  • 1.Christmas- has always been since I was a little kid

    2. Thanksgiving-Starting this time of year I start daydreaming about all the yummy food and all the excitement about the start of the Christmas season

    3. Valentine's Day.  Growing up my mom made V-Day fun by having us kids go on a scavanger hunt for little prizes.  We plan on carrying on this tradition.

    4. 4th of July.  I just love the BBQ, fair food and the fireworks.

  • I know it's not technically a holiday, but I love Christmas Eve--singing the Christmas hymns in candlelight church services is the most at peace I feel all year long.
  • Thanksgiving... the best food of the year... all from scratch! (No instant potatoes... and is that REAL PIE over there?!!?!?!?!?)

over where? You have quite the imagination... but now I am visualizing what kind of pie Hitchted thinks she sees over there?!  Strawberry Rhubard, Apple, Cherry, Pumpkin??  ;c )  lol

You are a lucky girl. I grew up on instant everything. When my grandmother passed (who use to make everything from scratch,) my mom started ordering Dierbergs every other year. Now I do the same, cause she never had/has the patience to teach me to cook (she's a Pisces/Aries.) I l looked into cooking classes at Dierbergs, but they are not the everyday meals, they are more for entertaining. :c (

  • Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday as well.  I love the fall and our house is always full of family and good food.

However Easter has my favorite candy.  I love LOVE cadbury eggs!

Thanksgivings have been a mixed bag the last few years... if it's at MIL, the pies & rolls are from Perkins (no joke; says she doesn't have the time or patience). I have learned some tricks about making turkey and the fixings (all from scratch!), as my own mother never really taught me much about cooking. Bah humbug. If I go to the big maternal side gathering, I get stuck peeling potatoes for 2 hours to feed 70+ people (they rent out a church hall)... small town Missouri folk know how to breed & feed. I always bring pumpkin bread and made pumpkin cheesecake for the gathering at MIL's last year.

  • Hitchtedin2006 - Where is this Thanksgiving breed and feed gathering for 70 ppl? I would LOVE to do something like that. When MH and I went to Honolulu, I could not stomach ALL of the homeless people. Our hotel was right by the ocean, and they were sleeping on the beach benches and under the pavilions. One night we went to this really expensive nice steak place and sat out on the terrace overlooking the ocean. I could see all the homeless ppl and could not sit there and eat a $65 steak knowing that I those ppl were probably eating out of garbage cans. One man in particular was sitting under the pavilion at a park bench, he was reading a book, and ppl would just come up and talk to him. Next thing I saw was him close his book, and lay his head down on the hard beach bench table. So needless to say I couldn't eat very much. MH was VERY upset with me (but I had nowhere to store the food, even if I did want to keep it,) so I asked our waitress to pack up all my food, utensils, plates, and napkins and brought it down to him and sat and talked to him for a little bit. Just in speaking to him, it made me realize that this situation could happen to anyone of us. He was JUST like you or me and 1 day his life changed before his eyes. So the next night and there after, I did the same. We ordered pizza and I just wanted to take what I wanted and bring the rest to him so it would still be hot. I walked down to the beach (by myself, MH was upset again) and brought it to them. The man started calling his other homeless friends over to share the pizza with them. It just broke my heart. Ever since then I have been wanting to volunteer at a soup kitchen for the homeless. I always did before, only now more so, because I saw the homeless (just like you and me) first hand. Please me know, I would really appreciate it!

BTW- good eye, I was seeing Apple pie (my fave) too! Wink

  • OOPS! I JUST realized the 70 ppl you were referring to was your family, not homeless ppl. lol Sorry. The homeless must be on my sub-conscious. Please ignore me and my request.
