We are currently buying a home, and want to have a house warming party once we get settled in so that our friends and families can come see the place. Not even sure where to start or what is involved... can anyone point me in the right direction?
Re: House Warming Party
I think open houses are the best for housewarming parties. People can come and go as they want and you get to prepare and then relax with your guests. It also helps ease the burdens of parking, bathrooms and chairs when you're expecting a lot of people because people aren't there all at once.
We gave family a suggested time of 1-5 and friends 7-whenever. It gives people direction, separates the guest list a little and hopefully gives you some time to recoup in between.
Then, decide on menu. Easy buffet-style or cookout work best because it's relaxed and you don't have to be over the stove while people are there. Dips, chips, veggies, bite-sized apps, pasta salads, finger sandwiches, cookies, brownies. Very basic. People want to be moving around, exploring your new house, maybe catching up with your SO's family (if they are friendly) or extended family--don't make them sit down or commit to one chair by having a big meal or unwieldy food.
Hope that gives you some ideas!

Agree with everything pp said. Keep the menu simple and mostly finger foodish. It should be casual and relaxed. What exactly do you need help with? Do you want a more specific menu?
