Fun plant suggestions for shade?

I did my full sun side of the house already and go to plant lots of color.  Now I have to do the full shade side.  The only thing I know that grows well in shade is a hosta.  Any suggestions?  I'd love to find something with color.

It really is full shade... like never gets sun because of a huge tree.

Re: Fun plant suggestions for shade?

  • I love heucheras, they come in a wide variety of colors and do great in the shade. Japanese reed grass is also really pretty and does well in the shade. I have a whole shade garden of mostly ferns?there are so many different kinds and they're easy to grow. Epimedium is another good option for a shade garden.

  • Astilbe are my current favorites.  Summer and fall blooming ones add color when most shade plants are done blooming.

Toad lilies, turtlehead, and lamium are some more summer-fall bloomers.

Like the pp said heucheras come in great colors.  The speckled purple leaved and lime green leaved (I <3 'Citronelle') varieities are my favorites.

Trillium, bleeding heart, shooting stars, columbine, spiderwort, woodland poppy, trout lily, virginia bluebells, and bloodroot are some of my spring blooming plants that add a lot of color.

Japanese painted ferns and red stemmed ferns are some of the more colorful ferns.

And don't discount hosts from looking colorful.  There are so many fun varieites out there with combinations of blue, lime green, and white.  I try stick with summer and fall bloomers in these too.  The mini ones are great for filling in between early blooming plants and the giant ones make such a statement.

  • I love variagated Jacob's Ladder, Solomon's Seal, and camelias.
  • Thanks so much for all the suggestions!  I'm going to make a list and head to the garden center this weekend! Smile
  • I like impatiens -- double and new zealand are are favorites.
