Hey everyone- can you help remind me of all the reasons why non-organic bananas are unsustainable, etc? I know if has to do with the worker's conditions and overharvesting of bananas, and I have heard that only buying free-trade bananas is important.... but I'm not sure why.
However, I did a few google searches and didn't come across any reliable and comprehensive sites. I know a few of you are very educated about bananas, so I'd appreciate it if you'd teach me.
Thanks!
Re: Bananas!
I forget which nestie's blog this is, but here is a good overview with some links for further reading.

I think the main problem is the chemicals used. They are one of the most pesticide-heavy crops, which is of course bad for the environment, but also the workers, who are practically enslaved, and work in these chemicals all day with no protective gear. There are a lot of health problems in the banana working industry because of this.
Fair-trade bananas are just a few cents more. Its such a simple thing. Whole Foods sells fair-trade and fair-trade organic bananas. My local produce stand even sells fair-trade bananas (although I do agree Seattle is a more environmentally and conscious area, this is edge of suburbia Renton, not exactly a green area).
This is a good site on the plight of banana workers http://www.panna.org/legacy/gpc/gpc_200404.14.1.06.dv.html
Oh that's me!
Hope it's helpful!
